600 Watts will definitely be enough. You really only need more than that with multi-gpu setups.
As for the GPU, this article should help: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-7870-review-benchmark,3148.html
I'm buying one for my build.

I would need the make and model of the power supply before I would say it will work. There is more to a power supply then what the manufacture rates it for. A good quality 600w unit will be more than enough for a 7870, but a low quality unit may fail, cause system instability or even damage other components when put under a load. The 7870 is a mid range gaming card and will ok for 1080p and lower resolutions.

How come you know your Christmas present before Christmas? What fun is that! Anyway, I would say the PSU is good enough, and the card is a decent upper midrange card by today's standards, and it is known to overclock well. Its is one of the top performers, and better value (performance for price) cards from last year.

500W (or greater) power supply with one 75W 6-pin PCI Express power connector recommended
600W power supply (or greater) with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express power connectors recommended for AMD CrossFire™ technology.

So... 600W is ok

just a question have you used the 7870 and what card do you game with ? I game on a 38 inch 1080P TV and My card is a gt 630 2gb now this card is an ok entry lvl it does pretty decent I could imagine the 7870 being a 100% boost I have watched videos on the 7870 and with it's price it seems to me to be a pretty high end card for 200 I mean Skyrim ultra max shadows 1080 at 60 fps that seems solid to me that's what I want I mean if 200 isn't gonna get you a bad as gaming experience then nothing will in my opinion unless high end to you means different like gtx titan 7990 Ect.....but the lady says 200 max lol I don't think i'll be getting a titan anytime soon lol besides my phenom II x6 would bottle neck one of those cards I think the 7870 would be a great match because right now my video card bottle necks my cpu

I game with a couple of 4Gb 770's. A 7870 is a vast improvement over a gt 630. And @ 1080p its not a bad card at all. For $200 though you could get a 7950 which is a bit better. www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202026
I have never used a 7870 in my rig but I have built a couple rigs where I used them.
Also just make sure you have a decent PSU manufacture wattage rating can be very misleading, many low end PSUs can't deliver close to thier rated wattage. Lets take the 600w Cooler Master extreme power plus for example. It's sold as a 600w unit but can only deliver 450w any thing over 450w and the PSU fails, but even at lower loads it had very poor voltage regulation. Using a PSU such as this actually puts the whole system at risk as it can damage other components in the system. This is why when people only post the wattage I ask for the make and model as the PSU is a very important part and get skimped on and overlooked alot.
