hey guys. Just have a question or three for the tech gurus around here on a new graphics card i'm thinking of picking up :)

Basically, i built a gaming rig about 4 years ago now and managed to keep it under 1k. Wasn't bad really...

i5-4570 3.2GHz
8g ram
Geforce GTX 760
1T HDD

nothing amazing, but pretty solid for the day and the price. Runs pretty much everything on high these days (used to run everything on ultra/max but as updates have gone out its ratcheted down to "high"... which i can live with).

Anyway, the 550w PSU in it took a crap on me yesterday and i had to replace it. Decided to hit up a best buy near my place (i know, i know... sorry... lol) and they had a decent Corsair 850w for a price i could live with so i grabbed it, slapped my system back together and its alive again. Yay.

But now i have extra power to play with... he he he.

Looking at upgrading the GFX card i'm thinking of the 200-250'ish range and as i look around it seems my best bet is one of the GTX 1060s running around (saw a gtx 1050ti in there too for the price but it parses way lower than the 1060).

Thinking of going EVGA as well... they are a bit cheaper and, while i've heard some horror stories, i've generally had good luck with their parts.

So... some questions...

1: anything better than the 1060 out there for that price range? Before i set my heart on it.

2: 3g vs. 6g. Its about a 50-75 dollar price difference so i'm wondering if the extra ram on the card is worth the money if i mostly do MMOs (WoW, Secret world, Overwatch, diablo 3, FF14 occasionally, etc.).

3: single fan or dual fan? Seeing a few of each around and curious if i should care.

4: EVGA good to go with? I've had good luck with them but i know there are MSI, Asus, etc. out there that might be a bit higher end. Just feels like i'm paying more for the brand if i go with, say, an MSI version... but i'm open to opinions.

And anything else i might be missing 😛

ty for the help and advice all :)

I sometimes run out of VRAM on my 6GB 1060. Not often, but it seems the extra 3GB does help at times. Once you have the card you can't further upgrade the VRAM, so unless you want to "cap" some of your future use I would say to consider the 6GB as having some actual purpose (you may not notice this on many games, I notice it more due to using dual display).

No.

I know I routinely exceed 3GB of VRAM usage with my 4690K/EVGA 970 FTW.

Single fan cards are usually louder under load. I prefer 2 fans over a single fan.

Yes.

I would personally wait until AMD gets the new Vega chips in stock mainly the Vega 56 and the competition flares up with Nvidia this is going to drive prices down. And always go with the higher ram most every game i play uses 5gb of VRam or higher. Note if you dont mind a open box card i have seen Gtx 1070s on newegg open box for $330 but make sure you check the prices of the non open box cards they try to slip some in there $20 lower then new and you only get a 90 day warranty. I got my 1080 for $150 off when i got it. Working good for 8 months now.
