getting data from a HDD the mobo can't read

someone gave me their old computer. They have a SATA HDD and the data can only be read with the mobo they gave me. Since I installed my own version on windows on the mobo, would the mobo even read their HDD anymore? Either way, I read I could just use a USB to HDD adapter to read the data off the SATA drive and it will work with any computer instead of taking this one apart and changing out the drive so they can retreive theri HDD data.
What is the adapter I need for this? Will the first items linked here on ebay work as long as they have the sata cable to connect it that aren't included? (the small black usb boxes for under $3 works?):

why not set up the boot sequence in the BIOS and cure your ills? or do a hot swap at the desktop and see if windows sees it or do a reboot if it doesn't....

If you're in the habit of assisting friends, I highly recommend something like this

Take the drive out, plug it in, connect to any PC (desktop or laptop) and transfer the files they need. I have one, and have used it dozens of times to get stuff off old drives and broken PC's.

I'd rather not swap them out and hope it works or change anything in BIOS I'm not familiar with.
I'd rather use the $3 ebay part (plus the'd need a spare SATA cable if they're transfering the files to the SATA they're already using and thus can't use that cable?). I can mail it to them and save the time of having to meet up and take my PC apart and putting their drive in it and hoping it works which I don't think it will especially after I installed a different OS to the mobo.

So just get the $3 ebay part and another SATA power and data cables if they don't have spares?

That $3 thing you posted is pretty much the same as the cable thing I linked. You must take the drive out and connect it to via USB to another PC to read it.

I know the one I linked works. I have one and use it routinely. The eBay one? No idea. But it is the same concept. But you have to source your own power cables, etc.

Well actually I'd need this floowing linked item because it has a usb cable unlike the other one I linked that's just like a small thumb drive. The cable of this one will let me open the side of the PC case and reach to the PSU power I'd need to borrow from the DVD rom because that power cable might not reach the thumb drive-style adapter if plugged into the back usb port:

Also, the SATA is a full-size desktop one, not the laptop smaller one that can be powered by the adapters I'm seeing that have two usbs and one supplies power to the laptop size sata, if i'm understanding this right.

I'm going to spend the extra $3 and get the $8 combo with the power supply like the one you lsay you USAFrat suggested. All the youtube videos I watched with these adpters, everyone uses the power adpter instead of the PSU and doesn't mention that you could just use the PSU if you open the case which I assume you can but don't want to chance it.

Unless there is some weird motherboard or BIOS based encryption, connecting it internally should work.
Never know until you try it.
