I'm having trouble getting my system to use DMA. I have two Altra ATA 100 harddrives and an Abit KT7A mobo and am running Win2k. Under the device Manager I have "DMA if availible" selected for my transfermode. However, the system only seems to be using PIO mode. I want to get the DMA transfer mode to work. Anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks.

i have a kt7 raid board and win2k. i dont see any option for dma at all for the ata 100 ports, but my 80 gig maxtor definetely uses it. i use it all the time for capping. does 2k switch dma on automatically? also, i have never installed and 4in1 drivers on my sys, under ME or 2k and never had problems. maybe a solution to problems people have with these boards is to not install the 4in1 drivers at all. i have a creative soundblaster card and i heard that is what caused the problem? via and creative? weird that i have no probs.

In Windows 2000 DMA is enabled per channel, not per device: therefore if you have two devices on one IDE channel, both must be DMA capable - this is important as some CDRom drives are not DMA capable.

To achieve full performance with ultraDMA66 you can find this in the registry file:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000

and add a new DWORD value called EnableUDMA66 with a value of 1.
