Getting into the "users" folder in old hard drive

I just hooked up my old hard drive to my new machine to get the files off of it and everything's fine, but I can't seem to get in to the users/(myusername) folder on it. It says to "click for permission" and when I do it just appears to be loading forever but nothing ever happens. Is that because that user account used to be password protected :T?

I need to get in to it because that's apparently where iPhone backups are stored by default and may be the second to last chance of salvaging the data of my bf's phone.

Even if that old account hadn't been password-protected the result would be the same, it happens simply because you are trying to access files or folders from one user account whilst logged on to a different user account.

You need to take ownership of those folders by editing the user permissions which relate to them:
