Getting multiple folders selected

Hello,

I have a HP laptop with windows 7 home basic, its being two days when i am trying to select a file or folder its getting selected all the above files also of that file or folder. how to solve this problem plz guide me....

press and hold ctrl instead of shift when clicking the file/folder.

unless i'm understanding it wrong and when you just normally click the folder, it also selects the ones above it...
