Getting peripherals from smaller websites because of better promo codes

Hey All - I am used to buying my peripherals from well known companies like amazon or newegg and the like. I'm wondering if I'm asking for trouble by going off the beaten path a little bit. What are the pros and cons of NOT going with the big boys? I mean, with my credit card I feel I am safe, so why not, right?

I am talking particularly about 2 sites one is Pricedepot.com because I was on Twitter and saw a promo code for 15% off + free shipping on computer monitor mounts. I need a couple more dual arm mounts for my office. That would be a big savings and the name brand I have used before. (BTW the promo code was smp15 you can see it works at the checkout so I am considering it.)

The other site is RetailMeNot.com - sometimes I see promo codes on there (nothing specific at the moment, but as an example) but they are sometimes for the smaller sites. It's easier to get the good promo codes from smaller sites if you look for them. I do like the idea of supporting the little shops. Any opinions?

safety. the big boys on the block are known to be safe to deal with. you pay, you get your product.

there have been cases of some smaller "retailers" getting your money then never shipping out a product nor giving a refund. fraud. just because you can do a stop payment with a credit card does not mean you are at zero risk which is why i would thoroughly check out a retailer before you purchase from them if they are not large.

with that said, i have bought from many very small companies (not pc parts but other things) and have been pleased. there are some great small companies out there.

long story short: it really depends on the business. there are some legitmate small businesses which do a great job while at the same time there are...
