Getting rid of porn from my computer for good

Greetings everyone,

I had a bad habit of watching porn and just quit, so I would like to get rid of all the evidence regarding it. My object is to make these evidence unrecoverable by any means and to that day I have used the free software "File Shredder" with Gutmann algorithm for that particular purpose but I have no guarantee that this method is reliable. Hence I consider buying and installing a new hard-disk which would resolve the issue for good, yet one question still remains: I will have backed up some files from my old drive by then, together with some directories which previously contained the aforementioned unwanted files(not containing the files at the time of backup), if I copy/move the directory which has a deleted file in it would this file be recoverable in the new destination ? Also I have my browser synchronized with my Google account and occasionally I forgot to go incognito, would the server retain the history information even if I have deleted them? Sorry to bother you with these questions but I am a pretty meticulous type of person and want to make sure that the new system is completely porn free; let me state that any suggestion is welcome and feel free to ask additional questions if my inquiry lacks clarity.

If you cleared your history in Chrome, I believe it deletes it off of the cloud. FYI, if you're going to windows format your old HDD, keep in mind that the data is still there until something else writes over it. It shouldn't copy traces of deleted files over to the new HDD as well.

This is a free software download which will get rid of any unwanted files and can be enabled as an option when you right click a file so that you can choose it instead of delete.
There is also another method that can be used and that is secure erase.

Thanks for the answers; I think buying a new HDD will resolve this issue and the URLs are not stored on the cloud since I have cleaned my history.

You honestly can't be serious... You'd throw away a perfectly fine HDD to 'hide' your bad habits?... just do a full format, reinstall Windows, get some video capturing program like Fraps and fire it up overnight so it fills your drive. Everything that was on the drive before will be irrecoverable.

Another solution is getting some freeware video editor such as Avidemux, drop some clip you have in it and append it few times (just keep drag'n'dropping) so it's like an hour long, set output resolution to 1920x1080 or higher (filters>resize), select YV12 under video output, AVI under format and save it.

Congratulations, you've just saved $150 for 10 mins (excluding Windows reinstall which doesn't take that long anyways) of effort and an hour or w/e is the time required for your HDD to get full.

Somethings not adding up. lol. Can't be that worried about a little porn unless it's illegal porn. What wife is going to do through undeleting a hard-drive that she doesn't know anything is even on. Seems like someone is more worried about the police than the wife.

- Search engines have logs
- Your internet service provider has logs
- Your own router can have logs
- Your local machine caches your DNS info ipconfig.exe /displaydns to see what it has
ipconfig.exe /flushdns to clear it.

- browsers have cache folder that can be looked at
- pagefiles can be examined
- you can even look at memory storage in RAM until the machine is powered off.
- you can look at memory images that gets place on disk with some sleep modes.

The level of effort to hide/clean this depends on who you expect to be looking.
even if you delete data, it can be recovered in a lot of cases if someone really wants to take the time.

even smashed drives can be repaired, smashed electronic boards on a drive can be replaced for $25-$50 , broken heads on the drive, you can move the platters to a new drive and spin them up and read the data. If the device is found then data can be recovered until the device is basically dissolved. If someone wants to spend the time, money and effort.
