Question getting sound off monitor when there is no built in speaker

I have a monitor and it does not have any built in speakers, but it receives signal via HDMI which carries sound signal as well. Can I somehow get a sound signal off the monitor and connect it to an external speaker? The monitor has a usb output and I connect it to a speaker but no sound came out of the speaker

No, but you could plug an HDMI audio extractor box into the cable to get analog-outs for powered speakers.
