I'm looking for Win98 SE on ebay and have noticed that some sellers sell something called Getting Started Windows 98. What is this? Is it just bare bones windows or something else? Please enlighten me. Thanks much!

You have to look carefully if you want one for ANY laptop, this link is the OEM version, that was dell, and I saw a gateway above it...if that would matter on such an old OS I have no idea. But the OEM version wouldn't have all their garbage. Course I wouldn't pay $85 either, but this is truly the microsoft version and a full one, not an upgrade like mine (so is the Dell you showed me I think (must be the 2nd Edition portion)...At the top of the book you will see different PC companies, that is the book I have though.

If you want to use it more than once, look for one with no company to be safe, such as this...

I don't mean this is a bad way, but why on gods earth would you be looking for Windows 98 in this age?

I love my 16 bit as much (if not more) than most, I actually have a PC running (good, if not dirty outside) with windows 98 on it, and a floppy drive from the IBM days, so i'm the last to criticize, but I was extremely curious. lol.

As for your question, getting started with Windows 98 is a book of learning material thats utterly useless, even back then.

If you saw a DVD, its probably a book in DVD form, I own a copy that came with that IBM actually called "Getting Started (and underneath that) Microsoft Windows 98" in big letters.

My title actually reads properly "Getting started with a New IBM PC only Microsoft Windows 98" and has the product key on it which may be the selling point.

I unfortunately only have a Windows 95 CD and Windows 98 was an upgrade CD that I lost over the years or I would have just sent you a copy...I doubt Microsoft would care at this point, or IBM, or anyone for that matter lol.

If you see or ask if the upgrade CD/DVD comes with it and I could find my windows 95 or 98 for that matter i'm sure no company would care if I sent you a copy but it'll be a bit before I could even say for sure I still have a copy.

PM me if thats of any interest, but that should solve your post regardless. Its either a book with an upgrade CD/DVD or just a book with a product code on it (you would hope lol)

I like buying old non-working laptops and making them run like new. It's a hobby that i really enjoy and unfortunately i don't have much time for. But anyway, it can be quite a challenge finding proprietary drivers.

Thanks for offering that. About the item, I do see that some describe the product as having a product key so i was confused and i did ask someone about it and they told me that it was a basic Win98....? Here's the link for the product.
