GF 6800Us having trouble reaching 450 with air.

The InQ is reporting that the GF6800UltraExtreme(no such beast according to nV) is having trouble reaching 450mhz using only air cooling. Gainward's water solution should still be ok, but air cooling seems out.

Ocing being a big part of bungholio comparisons and even simply squeezing more value from your part, this may happer some PR aspects, escpecially 3Dmark top scores, etc.

All the more reason for nV to switch their production to TSMC and get started on a Low-K/D version of the NV40/45 if they plan to offer these premium/enhanced cards.

Remember it is the Inquirer, so could be bunk.

Well, not really surprising. There two major factors here:

1.- Lowk makes a great diference when clocking the core. Just look at what 9600 get from it.
2.- 220 milion transistors are A LOT. And all of them should have to support that speed. The weakest link always set your limit, no matter the rest can go much further.

Add both factors, and you know why Nvidia will get problems to run 6800 at 450, while ATI will hit easily 500.

Right now people are reporting 550Mhz from X800Pro.

Well I just made myself a new video card cooler

No digit cam so here's what i did:

AMD Athlon 2500+ stock heatsink with copper base
156watt potted peltier plus copper plate
350watt FSP psu with 18A on 12V rail

So i pretty much epoxied the copper plate to the cold side of peltier, and the athlon heatsink to the hotside. Then hook up the peltier and fan to my backup psu. A simple drilling job got it fit on my 5900, a little safety caution so put dielectric grease everywhere on the card. now the core's load temp's under 36C

even though it's running at 550mhz. It didn't really give me any extra overclock, oh well guess i need more voltage.

I can't wait 'til i get that thing fitted on one of the new cards. I believe i can cool any video card

Pretty bad, still trying to break the 7000 barrier, around 6700-6800, depending on the mood of my computer.

But i break Aquamark3's 50k barrier easy.
I love my CPU it gets me 10k CPU mark in aquamark3.

In terms of raw power i'm sure my card's faster than yours, I mean the 30+G bandwidth, but once we crank up the IQ stuff in DX9 i'm not sure anymore.

What's wrong with a little peltier? You guys should try it, but i think with air an 80watt peltier's optimal. And it doesn't drain nearly as much power.

Major downside, the heatsink's untouchable, it's burning!! I just hope the peltier doesn't fail, oh well if it does, the card overheats and shuts off.

Maybe i should get a 80watt peltier.

Oh well this card for me was only 150CAD, can't really complaint. But I could've gotten a OEM 9800pro for 240CAD, and many members here suggested that the 9800pro isn't worth 90 bucks more.

If nV aren't using TSMCs lowK right now, which one are they using?

All of their initial NV40 chips are from IBM's East Fishkill plant (supposedly about 10,000 useable chips), and they are all standard 0.13 process.

nV is supposedly making all NV45 chips at TSMC, and the rest of their NV40 chips will be made there too. nV was not quick to adopt the LOW-K process as they had fears, and <A HREF="http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=12639" target="_new">called it reckless and dangerous that ATI was using the LOW-K process</A>.

It's still not clear fit they will switch to LOW-K now that it's a proven commodity/benifit.
