Hi all,
Tonight my gf had one of her sticks of RAM go kaput.
She had 8gb total and now she's down to 2 (I think because I gave her bad info about what slots to put 2 into)
She has a Dell XPS 8300 purchased last May from Best Buy, which I gave a better power supply and video card when she got it. She uses it for Skyrim, and is disappointed in the fact that today it wasn't booting and was giving her 4 beeps. I told her I thought it was RAM, and I was right. It's working again now that I had her take out RAM from slots 3 and 4. Now there are 2 sticks out of the original 4 in slots 1 and 2. Dxdiag is only showing 2gb RAM total.
I'm sure one of the two now removed sticks is still okay, and by process of elimination she could get back up to 6gb tomorrow night if I have her dig int here again (i'm on west coast, she's on east) but would those 3 sticks be in slots 1, 2, 3 and if there are only 2 sticks should they be in 1, 3 or 1, 2? I'm puzzled as to why it's only seeing one stick if the 2 are in 1, 2 currently.
I want her to get entirely new RAM. I imagine we'll keep her at 8gb, she has no need of more and her system has plenty of bottle necks elsewhere anyway. I do want her to end up with a better brand though, etc. Here's what she has 4 of now:

Using newegg's memory finder it shows a TON of stuff as being compatible with the Dell XPS 8300. Like 77 pages worth. Should I truly expect these to be honestly compatible? Is there any reason not to drop to 2 4 gb sticks rather than 4 2gb sticks? What slots would 2 4gb sticks go into? What would be a good deal on a decent brand (i'm comfortable with corsair, crucial mostly but I would trust a recommendation of another)
