GF6200s able to be moded to 6600s!

These are early results, but Hardwareluxx (the guys who benched the old cards) succesfully softmoded the GF6200s to GF6600+s;

If this has a high success rate you can bet that many people will get that card.

Yep, 'IF' it has a high success rate I will get that card. If only to benchmark and have as a back-up.

And if they make a pci-x version with sli .... i can see MANY people get it and mod it to dual 6600...

Well no PCI-X, but they will almost all be PCIe, however again, none will be SLI enabled according to nV's roadmap.

How can you judge the risk/success before there are even retail cards out there.

As for it being High RISK, these are LOW-END cards, there's nothing HIGH RISK about it. The only way it would be high risk would be if it were a HARD mod and you managed to solder your pancrease to the PCB. Being a soft mod the only realy risk would be getting stuck with a GF6200, and that's still a low risk proposition.

Seriously even as a softmod, if you're careful to make sure you know how to undo the effects, then you could probably return the card if you do it within a few days, and thus it would be NO risk, instead of low. Pick your retailer (God Bless you FS, for the only thing you do well [good return policy, almost as good as WalMart]).

Well looks like we may not be able to buy just a GF6200 without getting a system with it.

GF6200 OEM only, well there goes that plan!

So let me see if I can figure out a plan.

Aha!

Buy HP rig from Staples, swap card out for X300, return to unaware Staples employee? :evil:

Why not, I'll personally "inspect and confirm it's all intact" :wink: .

BTW we just received what I consider a more serious high end PC, the new HP Media Center 1160. This thing's pretty damn powerful: A64 3400+ (first desktop we ever had with A64s!), 512MB, 200GB HDD, DUAL LAYER 8x +/- DVD burner, but a cheap arse 5200XT... yes, XT! (I didn't know XT existed for nVidias too :eek: ).

Damn good PC for an OEM one, I admit, but I can't imagine the price this thing will have. Should be nice for display though.
