Just got Comcast Gigabit internet installed, barely breaking 85 down, 20 up. Is there something im missing? Anything to switch on in my computer? Read something about a gigabit switch, is that necessary? Comcast technician said to expect around 700 to 800 range but im getting a tenth of that speed

Solution

You need to determine if that is actually the case with the LAN adapter settings.

1. Is your PC wired directly to the router with a Cat5e cable?

2. What are ALL the parts between you and the router?

This sounds like either:

1. Your LAN port is stuck on 100mbps
or
2. Bad cable

Fairly certain cable is ok, but maybe could buy a decent one on amazon to test?
Noob question, but how do i push my LAN port up beyond 100mbps

Whats your motherboard? Im sure your mobo's nic is 10/100/1000 gigabit.

The setting link speed and duplex can be found in your network card properties under advanced. Should be on auto but can force 1000full duplex.

You dont have another or borrow a gigabit device to test transfer speeds on your Lan? To see if its your side or isp.
