Hey Guys,

I am trying to figure out the issue I am getting with my speeds. My hardware should be sufficient to get gigabit speeds.

1. PC - Lan Asrock Z87 Extreme 6 Samsung 850 Pro -- Windows 10

Router Netgear R8000

2. HTPC Asrock H81M-ITX Samsung 850 EVO Windows 7

I looked into the device manager on the network card on the 1 PC and I changed it to 1 Gigabit, but the 2. HTPC doesn't have that option it only shows 100mbit not sure what the issue is or why it doesn't show 1 gigabit option or why I should even have to configure it.

Any ideas would be helpful.

Thank you!

To enable 1Gbps connection, the switch, the network adapter/port of the motherboard, and also the cable all need to be 1Gbps compatible. Your motherboard features Qualcomm® Atheros® Gigabit LAN that support 1Gbps connection. There could be a cable problem or the chip simply just doesn't like to work the router at 1Gbps.

I suggest to upgrade the driver for the Aualcomm Atheros chip on the motherboard and then try to use different network cables to test it.

I didn't buy any special cables that are 1 gigabit if that is something I was suppose to do then I never did it and maybe that is the problem. I checked on asrocks website and this is the current driver I even reinstalled it and it didnt change anything. I am still wondering why 1gigbit is not an option in device manager, do you think it's because windows 7 is old or is it actually detecting that 1gigabit is not available? If so is it even possible for windows to detect a 100mbit cable vs a gigabit cable? Still feels like it is a software issue, but I dont know fore sure.

Thanks for your help,

Your situation reminds me of the HP Probook 4430s laptop PC that's equipped with a network chip that's compatible with 1Gbps network, but it will never run faster than 100Mbps. The issue is confirmed through some online forum discussions. I later just let it run at 100Mbps. It must be some design issue HP would never fix it but just sold them cheaply to get rid of the batch of the laptop PC.

Windows will not detect or test if a cable is compatible with 1Gbps or 100Mbps specifically, but the driver/hardware of the network chip on the motherboard will detect the optimum connection speed through negotiation with the router/switch it's connected to. If the cable quality is not up there, it will simply run at the lower speed, but there could also be compatibility issue the prevents it from running at 1Gbps.

Your are very welcome.

Comeon now, you don't need no Cat7 to run gigabit speed. Have you even benchmark what exactly are you getting?

If you are limited to 100mb or less, there is something else wrong with your setup.

If you are *only* getting 800 mbit, OK maybe a better cable would help.
