Question Gigabyte 2080 Super - - - - black screening and fans at max speed after literally only seconds of load ?

Hi there! A friend of mine's GIgabyte 2080 Super is giving black screen problems. I swapped my 1080 with said 2080 and:

1) As you can see from the pics I changed the thermal paste but I did NOT have thermal pads on hand, and they look like that. Could they be a problem?

ANYWAY

2) I tried the GPU with MSI Kombustor and ran a bunch of tests, many minutes each. Not a single problem and temperature never higher than 65° (pretty low). Then I launched PUBG... and it crashed with black screen and fans spinning at maximum speed in less than A MINUTE! And I could still hear sonds and I managed to regularly shut down the computer by pressing the power key... it was just the video signal missing! What the hell?

3) Also, my friend told me with some games the GPU does that black screen thing (Elden Ring, Automobilista 2) and with other games he can play for HOURS without a single problem (MXGP 2021 and a bunch of others).

The GPU acts the same in both systems. Both Asus Prime X-570P motherboards, both 750W Corsair TX750M PSU, I have a Ryzen 3700X, my friend a Ryzen 3600.

The GPU worked perfectly for almost three years, and started doing that only a few days ago.

Yeah, that looks terrible, you'll have to reapply thermal pads and paste.

By the way, I'm having this exact same issue with my GPU and funnily enough, I have the same GPU as you!
My specs:-

Ryzen 3600
MSI B450M Mortar
Gigabyte 2080 Super
SeaSonic FOCUS GX 550W PSU

My money is on bad-quality thermal application from the factory.
I am planning on disassembling the GPU and reapplying thermal pads/paste, if that doesn't work I'll change the PSU as a last resort before I ditch the GPU

I'm sorry to say but the GPU was dead. Changing thermal pads and paste (THREE times, just to be sure), did absolutely nothing.

Possible gpu voltage regulator failure. Black screen, PLUS fan ramp up is a symptom of that.

Lowering gpu power limit or running with frame caps, or both, can help with making the voltage regulator's life easier... ah, but it's dead. Sorry to hear that.

Did you tweak the fan settings? With the factory settings, the fans do not kick in until around 60c and by then, the components on the GPU are nearing 80c.

I downloaded MSI Afterburner today and changed the fan curves and made sure the fans were always running. Nothing crazy just moderately but with a steep curve. I then launched my most demanding game and played for hours and my GPU didn't crash for the first time in months.
