My friend has a PC with an i3-9100 on a Gigabyte B365M DS3H. They are looking to upgrade their CPU to an i5 or an i7. I've seen conflicting information on whether it makes sense to run an i7 with a B365 chipset, they aren't planning to overclock and it would be run at stock. Their current CPU is not enough for them anymore. I'd appreciate any input on whether it makes sense to look at an i7 as a potential upgrade.

Anyway you should update the Bios to latest version before attempting a CPU upgrade.
The motherboard is already running a i3-9100 without any issues. I don't think it would have any trouble running an i7-9700 without a bios upgrade?

The main thing I was worried about was my friend spending the money for a i7 and getting throttled performance because the motherboard "supports" it but has bad VRMs or something else because it's a budget B365 board. The current build was was put together with extra parts lying around.

Depends how big of a bump in perf they want and how many bucks they want to spend.

Maybe 9400 or 9700 both non-k.
