Hello Tom's Hardware.

I hope this is the right place to ask for this question.

Im pretty new to building computers, and this is my first build. I have an old computer with some parts i wanted to use for my new build since im on a tight budget.

Parts:

CPU - Fx-8320
CPU Cooler - ARCTIC Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2
Mobo - Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3 rev 1.0 (From Old PC)
Ram - Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866
WD Caviar Blue 640GB 3.5 (From old PC, only Temporary since i want a SSD, when i get more money)
GPU - Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB Windforce OC
PSU - LC-6450 v2.2 (From Old PC)
Case - BitFenix Nova ATX Mid Tower Case (Ex-Fan included)
Front Fans - 2 x ARCTIC F12 PWM 74.0 CFM 120mm Fan

1. Is this a good build? Would it work?
2. Since the CPU is not working with the current Bios version of the Mobo i will ofc update it, but would the CPU even work with my Mobo or does it go berserk with the temp?
3. Since that mobo have a 4 pin fan header does that mean i can control the 2 front fans?
4. I have used that PSU for my old pc for years and since i read somewhere that LC psu's is bad im a little scared to power the computer with it, Do u have any past experiences with LC psu's?

I hope u guys can help me since i pretty new to all this, but have done the research i could, maybe u guys can see things i have not yet seen.

According to the Gigabyte site has that revision no support for that cpu. From the latest cpu's are only the "E" types supported which are 95watt tdp cpu's. Abit strange since the FX 6350 is supported which is a 125watt tdp cpu.😛 You could look at that one of course or the FX 6300 which for games is decent enough as well.Might even overclock that one to FX 6350 level.
I'm not really happy with that psu btw, seems not really decent, but you could try of course.

Yeah i know that the support is none, but i have read people having sucess with this Revision. Some People report that the VRM gets hell alot hot, so could i maybe try to mount a Fan on top of the VRM? Im afraid that the CPU will throttle from the mobo. Might look into a FX-6300 instead, or maybe another mobo? do u have any suggestions for another budget mobo for the FX-8320? I would really like to have an Octa-core since im not going to do only Gaming.

One thing you could look at is this cooler,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA9ZH3S91419
with it's top down design good for cooling the vrm's too.
Other thing you could look at are these,

(these latest can be applied as is)
Well you get what i mean, with some thermal pad can these be applied to the vrm's like this,

For more heatsinks to go at the vrm's can you check here,

Another option for the cpu could be th 95watt tdp 8370e/8320e if you want an 8core. Don't know what else you do that requires an 8core.

In all honesty,if you want to invest in a new motherboard would i just wait for the new AMD Zen cpu's as well and maybe look at Intel also, upgrade the whole system then.

Solution

Thanks alot man!

I think im going for the Fx-8370E it's a few bucks more than the FX-8320 in my country so might aswell try.

I have another Question, since the Heatsinks can't be bought where i live, would the FX-8370E run on my Mobo without the heatsinks since it's only 95watts compared to 125 watts? With a good airflow in my case ofc and with that CPU cooler's flow going towards the backside of my case or should i point it with top blow?

And for gaming would i be better of with the Fx-6300 instead of FX-8370E? (It's a lot cheaper so i was just wondering if it would be better to go for that one instead)

Sorry for all the questions i was just wondering what to do with that mobo now i that i will get a less demanding CPU Wattwise.

Just pick the cheapest 8 core fx you can get (normally the 8300), ignore the CPU compatibily list , they will all run on that board because they're essentially the same chip at different speeds.
Youvcanbtinker with BIOS settings for optimal performance once its built.
Dump the freezer 7 pro because its going to be fairly useless .
If you can source one buy the raijintek Pallas cooler which offers north bridge & vrm cooling as well as being an excellent cpu cooler in its own right.

With that combo you won't have a single issue.

Thanks for that reply, but is it not better to go for the FX-6300 with a cheaper Cooler (Like the Arctic Pro) because that cooler is 54 dollars (compared to Arctic which is 24 dollars) so if we talk gaming wise would the FX-6300 (It's also a little cheaper than FX-8300) be better?

Gaming wise the 6300 is stronger than any of the e series 8 cores & the 8300 because its base core clock is higher.
You could happily run it at 4ghz on that board all day long.

I would not pay $24 for a freezer 7 , there are far better cores for less money.
Raijintek aidos
Coolermaster hyper 103
Deepcool gammaxx 300
Deepcool gammaxx s40

With a 6300 vrm cooling will not be necessary at all.

You say "in my country", which country is that or what site do you look at so we maybe can take a look at what's available for a cooler.

I'm still not happy with that psu, good thing is that the gpu you want needs a pcie power connector so probably will draw power from the second +12V rail.Since investing in new parts and that a psu can always be taken to a new system do i recommend replacing that as well, but it's up to you,it depends on your budget if that's possible.

Thanks again for replying. If i want to play games like CSGO, Battlefield 1, GTA V and so on, but also want to do some video editing and maybe som 3D programs, would i be better of with FX-6300 rather than 8300?

I live in Denmark so the prices for Parts are a little more expensive than in USA and UK but the prices for those fans are:

Arctic Freezer - 22 dollars
Raijintek aidos - 27 dollars.
Coolermaster hyper 103 - 25 dollars
Deepcool gammaxx 300 - 24 dollars
Deepcool gammaxx s40 - 32 dollars

Which one would u recommend me getting instead of the Arctic? I really need something that is silent if i can.

Thanks again for your help. I live in Denmark and i would rather buy localy than from UK or Germany since the difference in prices are not that great and the postal fee is higher.

If i use a 6300 or 8300 would not make that much of a diffrence to my budget since it's only 20 dollars or so cheaper to buy a 6300, but i want both gaming and video editing so im having a little trouble picking the right CPU.

I will replace the PSU in the future but right now i just want to play some games while im earning some money for new parts along the way, which PSU would u recommend for my system?

On another note if you don't have that case & those fans already its not a combo I would use

The nova has very poor airflow even with front fans fitted - I know its likely very cheap but when you add the cost of 2 f12 fans in ita likely you could buy a better case with good preinstalled cooling for about the same money.

PRI.arily I'd look at the zalman z3 plus as first choice if available or maybe the cooler master n300/n400 as other options.

No need to buy extra fans for these , the cm both come with 2 , the zalman comes with 5 preinstalled fans!

Alright thx! i will buy the Zalman Z3 Plus instead, it's a lot cheaper if i ditch the spare fans. I will also buy Fx-6300 (Also cheaper so yeah)

I want to buy that CPU Cooler, but which way should i point it? can i point it so flow goes out the back of the case or should it be a top or down airflow?

The gammaxx uses the stock amd mountings.
You can fix it horizontally only.
You want it with the fan sat towards the front next to the ram.
It will push air through the heatsink towards the rear exhaust.

Its a good good choice , very quick & easy to fit & has the thermal paste preapplied out of the box.

You will be far far better off with the zalman case , good choice ;-)
