Gigabyte GA-M56S-S3 & AMD HD6850

Hi,
just wondered if anybody knows about about changing PCIE clock speed on the mobo.

MoBo: Gigabyte GA-M56S-S3
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+
RAM: 4GB (4x1GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400
GPU: AMD HD 6850
Windows 7 64bit.

BIOS is F6H , this is for HD 5000 compatibility, however it works fine with the 6850.
Latest R2.62 realtek audio update got the mic in working.

However the problem is 3dmark is giving a low score, compared to what the 6850 can do. I would have been better buying a 5770 and saving the money.
Havn't got the actual scores to hand right now.

Display driver started with 11.2? now updated to 11.7? which was slower score. I've just checked and there is a 11.8 which I will try.

However there is a BIOS setting for PCIE clock speed, default 100MHz (up to 150MHz).
Will this help or is it a good idea to change it?

have you tried running a game? and then opening task manager, going to the processes tab and seeing what CPU usage is like, if its around 90-100% then i would say its a CPU bottleneck, if thats the issue then this would be a solution to that problem:

comparison of an athlon 5200+ vs a phenom 955, you can see in some games the FPS gain is up to 30-40 FPS:

i wouldn't reccommend a PCIE clock overclock, i would reccommend running a benchmark then using something like MSI afterburner and overclock your graphics card, then repeat the bench and compare results.

Yes I am on the latest beta BIOS F6H.

I was trying to avoid a CPU update, just trying to get the best out of what I had.
Without any real overclocking.
As if I update the CPU, then it will probably be limited by the DDR2 & AM2 FSB, so then a new mobo, etc, etc.
Sometimes I wish I'd just sticked with the X800GTO and bought a new machine later. Fully win7 compatible and better everything ;-)

I thought it would not be really a PCIE overclock as such.
As mobo is PCIE1.0 (250 MB/s).
PCIE clock default is 100MHz whereas it can go upto 150MHz.
The GPU is PCIE2.0 (500 MB/s) so theoretically it should be able to be increased.
Of course just remembered this is just the reference clock and will create the internall PLL 2.5GHz or 5GHz, hmm. Not a good idea then!

Just found out about GPU-Z so will see what it says about current setup.

Anyway ~110FPS in COD4 @ 1280x1024 is fine.

the performance difference beetween DDR2 and DDR3 is minimal, and the difference beetween HT1.0 and 3.0 has no real world performance. If you can you could try a CPU overclock.

ok, thanks for info, I definitely might consider a CPU update at some point.

Will also check the performance in game to see where the bottleneck is.
GPU seems to be at stock speeds. Bandwidth is 128GB/s. So I guess as good as it gets, unless the drivers improve at some point.

Actually the GPU-Z bandwidth figure is obviously wrong.
250MB/s X16 would be 4GB/s not 128.

but anyway thanks for the info.
