I've just built a new desktop PC but it won't POST or even power on at all, i.e. nothing happens when I press the power button - no fans spinning and no sign of life.

The kit is as follows:

CPU: Intel Core i5 3470S,1155, Ivy Bridge (http://ark.intel.com/products/68315)
Memory: 8GB (2x4GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Military Green, PC3-12800 (1600), Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 9-9-9-24, XMP, 1.35V (CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9G) (http://www.corsair.com/us/memory-by-product-family/vengeance/vengeance-8gb-dual-channel-ddr3-memory-kit-cmz8gx3m2a1600c9g.html)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H (http://uk.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4327#ov)
PSU: Cooler Master 500W SilentProM RS500AMBAD3 (http://www.coolermaster.com/product.php?product_id=4196)
HDD: Western Digital 500GB WD5000AAKX (http://www.wdc.com/global/products/specs/?driveID=896&language=1)

I've buit severeal PCs before and I am confident that I have connected everything properly. The power and reset switch connectors are connected to the motherbaord properly and the 2x12 and 2x2 12v power connectors are also in place properly. Of course, the PSU is definitely connected to the mains and switched on!

All the kit is new apart from the case which is around 5 years old and the PSU which is around 4 years old. The PSU was working fine a few days prior with different (but malfunctioning) kit, hence the upgrade.

I've done some research online and it looks like it could be that the 1.35v RAM isn't compatible with the new Ivy Bridge i5 processors. I've tried using each of the two DIMMs on its own in DDR slot 1 on the motherboard, but no joy. I press the power swtich but there are no signs of life whatsoever.

I've also heard that clearing the CMOS might help, but this is a brand new motherbaord so should have the factory default BIOS anyway, and besides - I can't even get the system to POST!

I'm prepared to exchange the memory for the 1.5v equivalent, but before I do that I just wanted to check if I'm missing anything?

It seems very odd to me that there is no sign of power whatsoever. If it is a memoery problem then I would have expected the PSU fan (and probably the CPU fan) to spin and the system to POST with a message indicating that the memory is unsupported, or something similar. The fact that the PSU fan doesn't spin really troubles me especially as it was working a few days ago with a different motherboard and CPU. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be an LED on the motherboard to indicate that it is receiving power.

I really hope someone here is able to help me - it's making me feel very stupid!

Thanks in advance
Rom

You can also clear the cmos by removing the cmos battery for 30sec, but I'm suspecting it's a faulty PSU, you can get a decent one pretty cheap or if you have a working computer you can borrow the psu from it to see if it's a faulty psu. When the system was malfunctioning, the malfunctioning parts could of taken out the psu or the psu was slowly dieing causing the parts to malfunction.

Thanks shafe88.

It seemed like a faulty PSU to me as well as the PSU fan wouldn't spin.

Unfortunately I don't have a spare PSU to test it with, but I can hook up my old kit again and see if the PSU works again.

I'll give that a try tonight and will post back with my results.

Appreciate the feedback, thanks very much :)
