For gaming, either is a good pick, any particulars that might apply like multiple GPUs, what CPU are you thinking about, The GB is better PCI-E wise, 2 HDMI, more USB 3 though both have 8 ports total (2 and 3), Asus better for SATA ports, Audio chipset,

Is the audio actually worth it on ROG

Not a good one for me - I'm not an audiophile, as long as I have clear nice sound (music, voices, et al) I'm good to go, I normally go with a good speaker set and woofer

so would having the extra fan controllers be worth getting the gigabyte or would it be better to get the asus and connect the fans to the psu.

Sorry that would be a personal choice, wouldn't matter to me one way or the other, properly set up shouldn't have to play with fans

No problem, sorry couldn't be more helpful on the fans, but I try to set all client systems (as well as my own) so don't have to be tinkering with things
