Guys I'm in desperate need of help. Just put together a new gaming rig and upon boot up in bios all sata ports show up as 'empty'. When installing win 8.1 via USB it states no drives could be detected therefore I can't install the os. I have used the gigabyte CD to install the relevant ahci sata drives at this stage but still hasn't changed anything...

To trouble shoot I have used different sata cables and different ports, the hdd and ssd are getting power as I can hear them operating. I have tried booting with only one in operation and nothing changes.

Here are my specs:
Core i5
8gb 1600 ram
500gb HDD and 256gb ssd
And r290
Gigabyte h97n WiF
600w PSU silver stone

Any help would be appreciated as I am about to call it quits on this build!

It seems whatever you are doing with the Gigabyte CD, you aren't installing the SATA driver. I suggest you use the Gigabyte support web page and download the Intel SATA Preinstall driver.
(For AHCI / RAID Mode)
Note: Windows setup to read from USB thumb drive.

Gigabyte uses a self-extracting .exc program that you need to run to uncompress the driver before using.

I have installed the driver for win 8.1 via USB as you said but still nothing? Should I install drivers from the CD and the USB with drivers from the site together? Don't imagine it would change much.

I would go install all drivers from the Gigabyte website, check the bios to make sure you have ACHI or IDE selected, whatever your case may be. If nothing still, rma the mobo sir, This should not be this difficult.

If the BIOS cannot see the drives then you are wasting your time attempting to install an OS. Check all the BIOS settings and make sure you have the latest BIOS installed. If you still cannot "see" the drives in the BIOS then you probably have a motherboard fault.
