This is my first build and I'm using a Gigabyte 970A-D3P. I've gone over all the cables and wiring and I'm fairly sure that everything is hooked up correctly but when I plug in my keyboard nothing happens. I've search some sites on my own but I just can't seem to find a solid answer. If anybody has any possible ideas as to what the problem may be it would be greatly appreciated.

Try another peripheral in all the USB ports. If it fail too, then your mothermoard came defective. Contact the Gigabyte service and activate the warranty.
Test the keyboard in another machine or laptop. Does it work?
Test another device (in all USB ports) with your new Gigabyte. Does it work?

If it is 'yes' for both question, tell us what is the brand and model of your keyboard. Check if this keyboard do not need pre-installed driver from the manufacturer.

The keyboard I'm using is a Logitech G105. It just tried it on both of my parents computers and it took about three seconds to configure then it worked no problem. When I plug it into my motherboard it's backlighting doesn't even turn on like its not getting any power at all. I tried all of the usb ports front and back with no results.

Yes the system boots. The fans and everything else that's hooked to the motherboard works too. Everything that I've plugged the keyboard into turns its backlighting on, even my xbox. When its plugged into my pc though I can't even manually turn the backlighting on or any other response.

I know I am late to the game but after almost 2 years of stability 4 of my 6 USB 3.0 slots failed at the same time in my Z77X-UDH3. Gigabyte support had me use my keyboard while in BIOS and while in Safe Mode in these failed slots. They didn't work either way.

I reported the results to Gigabyte Support and they immediately issued an RMA. Make sure you have the right drivers installed.

One other thing. In addition to their diagnostic steps I tried the same steps while using a Live Linux DVD (MINT in this case) and the ports wouldn't work there too. So it isn't a Windows issue.
