Hello, im shopping for a new cpu and i downloaded and used cpu-z to find out what socket my mobo has. its showing me am3, but when i google compatible cpus for my Gigabyte ga-990xa-ud3 motherboard, its showing me a list of am3+ AMD fx chips (witch is what i had my eye on). this list of compatable cpu's is from the Gigabyte website.

sooooo do i trust cpu-z. or do i trust Gygabytes list of cpus?

your board may support the am3 and am3+ as stated here at giga [if this is your 990fx ud3 revision -- rev. 1.x)
rev. 3.1rev. 3.0]

rev 1.x

rev 3.0

just go to your board and select the correct revision support and its supported CPU list and see whats listed like as above as supported cpu's to be used

asy you see from it the am3 is a supported chips as well as am3+

confuse thing ??? every board has a support cpu list and the bios required for each chip it supports that's not very confusing

and if he got a older giga 990fx board it may show as am3 caust its supports am3 first off and am3+ is just a slightly improved am3

as you see from the winki link and the giga link am3+ ''bulldozre will work on as far back as a 800 / 700 chip set

First off, lists on MB makers site may not be updated to include newest processors or even earlier ones they didn't test with.
Secondly, BIOS versions for each processor should be checked against MB version.
FX x1xx have bulldozer core and x3xx are Vishera core.
