Hey folks,
I have a Gigabyte Z270X Gaming 7 mobo that has been giving me problems almost since the day I bought it. Intermittently, when I plug in a USB storage device, the monitor goes blank, and the computer stops responding to ANY input, including the power button. It’s happened so often, I’ve created a “shutdown” shortcut that I can easily access blindly with a few keystrokes. The shortcut method works fine while the computer is running normally, but does not work once a USB drive has caused the screen to go blank. I’m always forced to do a hard reset, and in many cases, have lost important data in the process. I highly suspect the computer is freezing up, but I can’t tell for sure because I can’t see the screen.
In the process of trying to figure this out, I’ve updated and/or experimented with every driver available for the mobo and attached hardware. For the record, I am using a XFX Radeon RX-470P4SFD5 video card, plugged into the PCIEX16 slot. The problem has persisted throughout multiple version updates of Windows 10 (1703, 1709, 1803, and 1809), with a completely clean install at 1803. I’ve also replaced the power supply on a suggestion I found at another forum. Since the problem seems to be isolated to the front panel USB 3.0 ports, I have even swapped out the case, thinking there may be a problem with the physical ports on the front panel, or the cable that attaches them to the mobo.
To add insult to injury, the Windows Event Viewer does not appear to be recording the event. I can find the entry stating “the previous system shutdown was unexpected”, but there are no entries leading up to it that identify what happened. One of the most frustrating aspects is how intermittent it is. I have a variety of flash drives and portable hard drives, and most of the time, they don’t cause any problems. The problem only occurs randomly, and seems to have no relation to which one of my devices I use.
I think I’ve tried just about all the usual fixes, and even a few unusual fixes trying to solve this one. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.
