Hi built my pc last year and too be honest never really played it as kids took it over but recently started gaming on it and want to get a m. 2 drive as I only got a standard HDD in it atm but confused about the whole m. 2 cards what cards fit it as I noticed some cards have different fittings at the end thanks for any help

Solution
There are two types of m2 drives, Sata with speeds up to 6gb/s, and Nvme with speeds up to 32gb/s. 2280 is usually the size of m2 offered. You can get a 1 tb Samsung Evo Pro nvme for $159 at Amazon right now which is a great ssd and great price all in one.

GIgabyte Z370P D3:
  1. 1 x M.2 connector (Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280/22110 SATA and PCIe x4/x2 SSD support)
At a basic level, M.2 is the form factor
The PCIe / SATA is the interface (the bus the device uses for data).
The M Key is the socket itself (they're pretty standard - so don't worry too much).
And the 2242/2260 etc are the lengths of the M2.

In other words, you want a NVMe M2. Or an M2 that's labelled as PCIe. M key is technically the actual socket itself.

So something like this :
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z370P D3 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Storage: Samsung 970 Evo 500 GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive ($89.99 @ Amazon)

Basically, you don't want a SATA interface M2.
