Gigabyte9700Pro Troubles

I have a Gigabyte Radeon 9700 Pro and in the last month I had had some troubs.

My box is a AMD Athlon XP 1800+
512 DDRAM
Gigabyte Radeon9700Pro
80gig Seagate HDD
Windows XP
DirectX 9

I boot my computer and get into Windows. Then I'll do something like Start Battlefield 1942 or minimise a few internet explorer windows and then it happens. All of a sudden I get these green diaganol/horizontal lines that replace anything that's gradient or animated.

For example if I am in XP all of a sudden the taskbar and my icons and background image are all greened out. Or for example I boot BF1942 and I get in and I press "Single Player" and the whole screen gets green.

Then for the next half and hour or so while I am restarting the ASUS mobo boot up screen is all screwed up in the same way as well. And it only fixes itself after leaving it off for a few hours.

One problem could be that when I pulled the case off I noticed that the fan didn't start. Now I don't know anything about the Gigabyte card but perhaps the fan only starts when it's needed to cool the card down? I tried blowing and poking the fan and it's pretty stiff but could this be the cause of the problem?

I have also rolledback drivers and installled new ones etc. And it works for a short time before stuffing up again.

Any ideas?

I just read that all radeon gfx cards don't have auto starting fans but I have never seen it on?

Is there any way to get the fan going from start up? If I get a case fan would that be enough?

I am concluded (if no one can proove me wrong) that it is overheating.

The fan should be on all of the time. And if it isn't on, its faulty, which is what is causing your card to overheat and artifacts to appear. If it is still under warranty send it back so that it can be replaced with a model with a working fan.

Ah gigabyte and their crappy 9700pro first revision fans
Seems like the fan has died and the card is overheating. You can either ask gigabyte for a replacement fan. Or send it to them for them to replace. Or get a 80mm fan and place it where it blows at the card to cool it
