Gionee Elife: Hands-on the Thinnest Smartphone in the World

So... other than for a company to say "we did it" what exactly is the point of these ultra slim devices? I own a Lumia 920, so I understand the need to slim down and loose weight a bit on a phone... but I cannot imagine a real need for a phone to be any thinner than something like an iPhone or an HTC One.It is kind of like the thin display movement. Yes, we all appreciated the move from CRTs to flat panels... and we all appreciated the move from 2" thick TVs to something thin and light enough to hang on a wall fairly easily. But we are at a point today where the thickness of devices is no longer a selling point.I mean, I would rather have a slightly thicker phone that has 2-3 day battery, or decent thermal dissipation, or more/faster storage, or trim the bezel down to nothing. These are all selling points now. So long as the thickness is not horribly thick, you no longer need to be the slimmest device on the market to be the 'best'.

Wax all you want about wanting a longer battery for extra thickness, you may as well stick with a brick, somebody will always want the thinnest and lightest in a particular screen size. The best dumb phone I ever owned was a Samsung U100 and at 5.9mm was the worlds thinnest phone at that time, this is even thinner and it wont stop there, eventually someone will make the "Iron Man" phone which is just a bezel with glass in the middle. My bet is on Samsung doing it first.

"Luckily, the S5.5 isn't just a pretty face"If the specifications posted on the Web are correct. That's all this phone is, just another pretty face. No wireless, no gps, no bluetooth, no DLNA. All the reviewer did was hold the phone and look at the screen. And yet he makes it sound like everyone should run out and buy it just on looks alone!
