I am currently using an Auria 27" display with the following specs:
IPS Panel
2880 x 1620 Resolution
60 Hz Frequency
VGA / DVI / DisplayPort / HDMI Inputs

I really don't want to change it out as it has really accurate colors for my photography. Saying that, I know I need a new video card for game playing. Current is EVGA GTX 650 ti boost.

I have been reading all kinds of stuff on 10xx cards and frankly am a little confused as to which card will provide the best price/performance. Originally, I thought a 1060 6GB would be good, but want to future proof to some extent, so perhaps a 1070 ti. Then noticing that the 1080 is quite close in price to the 1070 ti...maybe a better solution.

Now I am thinking that perhaps the higher end cards are wasted performance for the monitor. Yikes, please straighten me out.....thanks.

Oh, and I am sure the question as to what the rest of the system looks like will come up....please see below:

Intel i7-3770 3.4GHz
ASUS P8H77-V MB
16GB DDR3
Samsung 256GB 830 SSD (OS and apps)
1TB WD Black HDD (data)
XFX Pro550W PSU

A 3k monitor, I don't see many of those mentioned. Well, for gaming you want all the power you can get. On the plus side, since you're not at 4k you'll get better performance. My understanding of the 1080 vs 1070 Ti thing is you can get more value from the 1070 Ti by overclocking it. If the sound of that doesn't interest you, then get the 1080.

You could get a 1060 and just run at a lower resolution but that seems to be a waste of a perfectly good 3k monitor. I don't look at XFX as the power supply of choice, so maybe an upgrade there is warranted.
