I was just given a GMax 3D Printer however neither me nor the person who gave me the printer have been able to connect it to my computer correctly. Once plugged in with a USB-Serial connector, it fails to download a driver and sits as an unknown device in my USB port. I have not found a way to get a COMx for it, which is needed for the printing software, nor have I been able to get it to be recognized on any of my software. It works perfectly fine however with the other person's macbook.

-The view of my device manager, the printer becomes labeled "Unknown device"

The printer itself has no drivers to download on the website as far as I know.

Thanks for any help.

Sounds like you need a USB-Serial adapter with an actual serial controller built-in. These are more expensive then the 'dumb' adapters out there.

Something like the Brainbox: http://us.brainboxes.com/product/us-101/1-port-rs232-usb-to-serial-adapter

Or this model, which works pretty well for most things: https://www.iogear.com/product/GUC232A/

I have both, though my brainbox is a little older, and they work great for my old motor controllers.
