Hello. I have a GN246HL. It arrived about an hour ago. I cannot seem to get 144hz to work

I'm using it on my dad's computer. My dad's video card does not have a VGA port but his motherboard does. He has a ASUS RX 480 8 gb.

I have VGA and HDMI hooked up. Again the VGA is through my dad's motherboard. Could that be why it's not working ?? :(

Solution
Yes I am plugging in the one that came with the monitor. Under display adapter properties it says 60 hz.
I found your issue, you need a Dual-Link DVI cable:
Connectivity consists of VGA, HDMI, and Dual-Link DVI. Only the DVI port supports 1080p up to 144Hz whereas the HDMI port is limited to 60Hz even though it theoretically has enough bandwidth for 144Hz.

My monitor (GN246HL) does not seem to have a Display Port on the back. I watched a video about this monitor and the person used both HDMI and another one. I think it was VGA.

OK one last question then this should be wrapped up.

What's a dual link DVI Cable? (i am hoping my monitor came with one)

Given that it is a DVI cable will I be OK without a DVI plug in on my video card?

Well I am not sure what to say after reading the sticky but I don't think it answers my question.
It does :p

"The only way to get 144 Hz on the Acer GN246HL or BenQ XL2411Z is by connecting to the monitor's DVI port with a Dual-Link DVI connection. The monitor's VGA and HDMI ports are limited to around 60 Hz at 1080p."

That won't work, refer to the sticky section 0: https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/how-to-connect-to-a-120-hz-display.3268285/

What kind of DisplayPort adapters can I use?

Getting 1080p 144 Hz on a DP to DVI connection requires specialized adapters. You cannot use normal $10 DP to DVI adapters.
You need to use a DUAL-LINK ACTIVE ADAPTER, which usually costs around $80–$100 USD.
Please note, you cannot use just any "active adapter". It must be a DUAL-LINK active adapter. Not all DP to DVI active adapters are Dual-Link.

There is literally a video that says you need to plug in an HDMI porn with a VGA Cable at the same time to get 144hz. That must be the source of my confusion. I thought that's what they meant by dual link DVI.
