I built a new PC couple years ago but kept my old 24 inch Dell Ultrasharp IPS 1920x1200, since I was happy with it. Now I've been looking to go up to a 27 inch display, but I don't know which way to go. My GPU is 1080 ti so not a rocket by any means. I do 95% desktop + watching movies/series (2160p or 1080p), 5% light gaming. I've been to the shop to look at different displays, but they're running demo modes and not in desktop so it's really difficult to say anything about how text looks on them.

I like the idea of getting better resolution for movies but would a 4k monitor go to complete waste here and is my GPU too slow to take advantage of it? Would a 2K IPS display offer any significant upgrade from my current Dell? I can come up with a budget for the display, if it feels like I'm getting something noticably better for it.

Thanks!

27 inch @ 4k is pushing it.
Everything will be very small and windows scaling will need to be set to 200-300%.
For most things this is fine but causes problems with some programs/games.
If the text on displays look good in the store then they will look good in regular mode.
Demo mode is usually just exaggerated digital vibrance to make the monitor colors look good in a brightly lit store.

Bust your budget if necessary to buy the very best monitor you can.
It will be with you for a very long time.
I would look for a much larger 4k monitor.
GTX1080 will nave no problem with it so long as you are not into fast action gaming.

And... plan on keeping your old monitor as a side monitor for email, monitors, etc.
