I have an AMD setup right now and I am transporting all my stuff to a mini-itx setup...well you cant use AM3+ with mini-itx so I am going Intel now.

My question is should I go Skylake or Broadwell. One of the main differences is I can use my current ram if I stay with Broadwell due to it being DDR3...and the CPU improvement doesnt look like its all that much to justify having to buy more ram.

Was looking at the i5 6600k or going with the similar i5 of Broadwell, or possibly even an i7 due to saving some ram money.

Any input would be great here.

thanks

to me unless you were ddr4 die hard wanting I'd just stick with haswell ?? you may look in to skylake / 1151 running ddr3 over 1.35v memory ?? skylake / 1151 dont impress me as long as haswell is still around

too many little funny things about skylake / 1151 that may bite you down the road if you miss those things today ?? with intel tic-tock road map unless you just want ddr4 I don't see any reason for it ?? [opinion]

like this guy and his memory thing so whos right intel saying no to high voltage memory or asus/gigabyte specing up to 1.65v ??

when you got something your 100% sure of and agree on firm specs let me know too much unsure of's

so to me stick with a haswell until skylake / 1151 blows over and we get a true ddr4 platform with out all the what if's and not sure of's

good luck

Considering you are buying a new system, I would recommend going for Skylake since you want to be as future proof as possible. On top, keeping that aside, skylake offers around 10-20% boost in CPU performance and also much faster iGPU's.

Moving onto your main concern, don't try to save just because of your ram. You would need to spend minimal amount to get decent DDR4 8GB sticks and secure yourself a PC which will last you for years (depends on other parts as well) rather than saving now and having the need to upgrade later in some years time.

Also, don't buy the i7 unless you are doing some 3D modelling or rendering because these are the only things that will use the 8 threads in your i7. Other than that, all softwares + games use 4 threads max which will work fine for you.

P.S You might want to look at the price trends since the k version of the processors are not available in that amount so you should expect high prices for skylake atm.

The thing with skylake is, it has a lower power consumption, higher performance, both CPU and iGPU and it runs cooler. Now, I don't know what drawbacks you are talking about so I can't say anything for that matter.

Can I put my point laughing loudly at previous comment? You got brainwashed very well by Intel.
Did you see the numbers? "higher performance lower power consumption", yes they did well puting +1% here and -2% there calling it a brand new series. Do you know the term of "milking the consumer"?

As far as somebody wants a brand new mobo + cpu + ram, that doesn't matter which way he go as far as the price is correctly set. But for ppl who have DDR3 already thats a huge waste of cash.

Edit: Why Broadwell? Is it available at your location for a decent price? On partpicker i can see only i7-5775C for over 400$ which isn't the best deal out there either.

aint skylake a 91w chip and haswell is a 84w hasewll refresh is 88w ?? [k chips]

so 91w is better ??

''That's just plain wrong. An Intel spokesman told me clearly that Skylake does not support DDR3 or DDR3L at 1.5 volts. It only supports DDR3L at 1.35 volts and DDR4 at 1.2 volts, period, end of story.

http://www.itworld.com/article/2988195/hardware/motherb...

so with that what do you trust ?? asus and giga have ddr3 skylake board that got up to 1.65v memory listed intel claims no way ???

hype and smoke screens ... all I can say is dig in and do your home work with out there wool pulled over your eyes

good luck and enjoy
