Hi,

This has worked or the last 2 years but now it does not show in Win 10 x64 Explorer. I have tried in 2 boxes.

When I move the power lead at the Flex box I hear it start, but there is a knocking sound, then it just slows down and stops.

I see in Dev Mgr and Disk Manager it does not show

Any suggestions please?

oz

EDIT: I have taken the drive out of the enclosure and put it in another enclosure but it whirs, a few noises and then after a few secs winds down and stops.

EDIT: This is the sound it is making

Appreciate any input. Thanks

It's very likely the drive has failed, Seagate externals aren't as reliable as WD ones in my experience.
I avoid buying Seagate drives now, had two fail on me in as many years.

If you need to recover data from it, a professional data recovery service is the only option with a failed drive.
I always keep two backups of my data on two more externals so I never have to use such a service, it's way too expensive for the average consumer.

Thank you for your reply. Yes I guess you are right. I have checked the data recovery places and they are way over the top in price unfortunately. I have recovered before with s/w but the drives could be seen whereas this one cannot.

I see on Youtube those who have recovered themselves by carefully opening the drive. I suppose if one has nothing to lose, at least it's a chance if one is very careful. It becomes a doorstop anyway !

I am thinking of buying a 4TB to use as backup of my most important 'can't lose' stuff (mostly our edited videos, multitrack audio etc) for my other drives and it seems the WD 4TB Black is the go, but once again quite exy. I don't want to overkill just for backups, but do want to know they are safe. Then again is it best inside the box ( a DellT7500) or as USB or esata encl.

My other thought was to get 2 cheaper 4Tb drives and have one as backup and then back that up just in base. Seems a lot of messing around though.

I do appreciate your input many thanks,

oz

Because of the type of work we do we have many large video files that we cut up and edited into many other smaller files, then burn to DVD etc. Over the years we have ended up with files coming out the ying yang ! Much of it of a future historic nature, so just can't throw them away.

On our main Dell T7500 box I have a Disconics esata 4 HD external case with 4 x 1TB drives plus 4 other external USB 1TB boxes not to mention the SSD o/s drive and other internals. So one can see I if I had to back up everything I would be looking at 40TB or so.

Too much for Dropbox which I use daily and too big for any other cloud.

Now this has fallen over I need to reassess what I really need to keep and make sure I have backups, so there goes productivity whilst much time is spent doing this.

I have a friend in IT who is in and out of India and I am thinking seeing about a Data recovery centre there giving me a quote. I believe just a fraction of what Australian centres charge. Anway just a thought at the moment.
