Hello dear forum members,

Today I decided to hop over on the ship of intel (because of heat problems with my cpu, already mounted noctua DH-N14, no noteworthy changes).

My problem now is that I have no clue which Mobo to buy.

I have a list of 4 mobo's

ASRock Z170 Extreme4
Gigabyte GA-Z170XP-SLI
Asus Z170 PRO GAMING
ASRock B150M Combo-G

My current setup :
FX8350
990fx Killer Fatal1ty
4x 4gb corsair vengeance DDR3
3x SSD (intel and samsung)
2x 3tb HDD (wd and seagate)
2x R9 290 Tri-x Sapphire
Noctua DH-N14

Okay, so, I have read somewhere that the last mobo in the list is going to support DDR3 as well as DDR4.

I'll wait for the big brother of it which will have 4x DDR3 and 2x DDR4.

I would like to have the opinion of you guys about it.

Is it really necessary to buy DDR4 to be future proof? Is it that much superior to DDR3?

It would cost me a lot of I wanted to replace the RAM's too, but that combo mobo sounds really appealing. Are there any cons to it? If so, what are the cons?

What is the best DDR4 only mobo in my list (from the top 3).

I really would like to have your input guys.

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

MesutOzil

dont get DDR3 .. go with DDR4 .. and avoid combo motherboards.

as for Mobos choices , can I ask you how much you want to pay and where do you buy from ?

from that list , I prefer the Extreme 4

My budget for mobo is 130 euros and if its really really reallyyyy necessary, maybe 150. I live in the Netherlands, so shits kinda expensive. The asus z170a is expensive as fuck 150-180 euros excl. shipping of 10 euros approx. Any other suggestions? And please back up your suggestions with the pros and cons over the other boards etc.

DDR4 isn't anything special. Sure it's newer and allows for future freedom but it doesn't have major benefits over DDR3. As for CPU performance, as the standard is with Intel, Skylake doesn't have major improvements over Haswell. Am I saying not to go with Skylake, no. Just trying to make sure you aren't let down because of hype.

it is not expensive , it is the vat Taxes.

in EU they put the TAX included in prices online . in USA they dont put the tax price included online , thats why you "think" you are more expensive.

give me a moment .. will see what I can do.

what Skylake gives you more :

1- True dual M2 slot x4 PCi3 3.0
2- USb 3.1 in most motherboards
3- more GPU lanes , the other hardware is on chipset lanes of PCIe 3.0
4- 64G of DDR4 total vs 32 G of ddr3 Ram.

stop saying it is a hype . and dont start saying we will not need it. you never know the future

Thank you for listing out the benefits of a new socket/chipset. I'm sure it will help the OP decide if they are going to use the features. Make sure you explain these features as the OP may not understand the features. Also make sure you explain that there is very little performance difference between Haswell and Skylake which is typically the main concern with people building a computer. Not everyone get's excited like you do with all the extra features. Considering the majority of gamers use only 1 GPU, 8 GB (maybe 16GB), a SATA SSD and very few large USB file transfers, make sure you explain that some of the features right now are a premium an may or may not be useful in the future.

Clarity. Not selling a hype or pressing my personal opinion on every post.

it is not about the cpu alone.

sandybridge dont even have usb3 nor PCIe 3.0 to run faster SSD or external devices.

the usb2 cant transfer more than 40MB/s , while USB3 external harddisk does 150MB/s easy and 400M/s SSD easy

thats one benefit. they miss.

stop changing people mind from the wonderful new technology .

the same will happen with Z170

M2 SSD is 4000MB/s max and soon will reach that boundary ..

people with Z97 will cry maxing at 1000 ...

and dont tell me you dont need it .. thats your choice not other people choices.

They might need it but they cannot afford it. Get a 2.5 850 Evo and your good for years.

I won't cry with a single graphics card in 3.0 8x mode running a m.2 adapter in the second slot, or how about that new Intel Optane SSD thats in development? I hope its 8x and not 4x!!!

Why do you think PCI-E 2.0 x16 (AKA PCIE 3.0 x8) is not enough? If that were the case, everyone without an X board running SLI are idiots. It's all about cost, and when you buy.

+1

I use a 4460 and GTX 960 with a wifi adapter. No bottleneck whatsoever. As long as you have 8x your good. Like dual 980Ti on a 6700k. The 6700k is probably holding the 980Ti's back tho...

Again sna as will said, thats like saying everyone using a 4690k and 3 970s etc. etc. are dumb.

Okay, I still haven't got any clear answers with which board I should go. I decided toto go with the latest Z170 boards, as the rams are gonna cost me only 100 euro's approx. for 2 x 8gb.
