All switching DC-DC converters of any significant power use either an inductor (buck regulator) or transformer (forward converter) but they are often encapsulated to make them compatible with pick-and-place automated assembly. Those typically look like small generic black boxes, often solid epoxy or plastic injection directly on top of the inductor/transformer.
Going with the Intel® Core™ i5-2500K or Intel Core i5-3570K and a good Z77 chipset based board would be your best option. They are both great performing processors for a gaming environment and offer outstanding value.
