I want to upgrade to a DDR system with a 266 MHz FSB. I will be buying an Asus A7M266 motherboard and would like to buy the CPU now rather than wait for the new "C" T-Birds. I have been reading about the L1 pencil trick to unlock the "B" processors, but have read about problems on certain motherboards. Does anyone know if I can get a regular athlon up to 266 MHz FSB on the A7M266?

Thanks in advance

yes you can,

although, the current revision of the a7m266 (rev 1.03 i think) doesn't have any dips for multiplier adjustment and you can't adjust it in the bios.

(check out review at xbitlabs.com)

so while the older proccessors will work with the 133 bus, you won't be able to lower you multiplier.

So, if you bought a 1Ghz chip, and tried running it at 133,
it would go 133x10 which would be 1.33 Ghz, and i doubt that the chip could do that.

So i think that i'll be waiting for a different revision of the asus board (when they put in the dips) before i buy it.

(lots of people have been complaining about this at the asus web site)

Get a Abit mobo KT7A(-raid) and the Tbird A1xxxAPT3C is now available and you can fullfill all you wishes, but these mobo is still with PC133 SDRAM

i say WAIT!!!!!!!! don't do it!!!!! what is the hurry? wait till the price comes down a bit or better yet wait for the next series of 266 motherboards. never get a first year model!

If you can't beat 'em kill 'em
