I'm going to buy a 1 TB WD Black hard drive soon in order to add more space to my computer. Is it as simple as just plugging it in? Will I have to do any special formatting? Will there be any compatibility issues with my 500gb Seagate Barracuda?
You will need to go to control panel/administrative tools/computer management/storage/disk management.
There, you will have options to partition or format your new drive and make it known to windows.

Is there anything special I have to do after formatting it or partitioning it? I'm not too good with that kind of stuff
When you connect your drive, before closing the covers - power your computer, and enter BIOS. Make sure you can see your new drive there.
During formatting, Windows will ask you to assign driver letter(s) to volume(s) being formatted. Choose one to your liking, it does not has to be F: or D:
