Going to pick it up

I remember playing Daggerfall quite a number of years ago and really
enjoyed it. Then, halfway through my game, I changed computers and OSes
to windows XP. Daggerfall no longer worked, so I stopped and put it
aside.

Now I see that they (Bethesda, IIRC) have put out a sequel, Morrowind,
that has been out for a couple of years now. This is a good thing being
the cheap-assed bastard that I am. After reading the FAQ, I see that
there is a Game-of-the-year (or some other impressive name that i can't
recall) edition that has the game plus the two expansions packs. Now I
have a couple of questions:

1 - When I install the game, will the expansion packs automatically get
installed, or do I install them separately?

2 - Are the main storyline and the expansion pack storylines tightly
interwoven, or should I wait to finish one and then start the others??

3 - By reading the FAQ, I see that ther are oodles and oodles of mods out
there. Given that, what would be your top 15 or 20 mods that would be
recommended to me?? I am not looking for cosmetic mods or anything like
that, but ones that may improve gameplay significantly. From reading a
thread in another forum, there is one that makes the monsters harder to
kill (and results (unexpectedly??) in improving skills faster). Are there
any that I should stay away from?? If I actually went to the websites in
the FAQ (www.uesp.com, IIRC) would I find all the answers to my
questions??

Thanks

Marcel

Well, you can keep them separate pretty much, but the Tribunal one sets
Dark Brotherhood assassins after you, and you have to go to Mournhold to
get them to stop.

I strongly suggest that you play the game clean without any mods at
first. After you gain experience you'll get a better feel for what mods
you want.

I use mods like Ogrim Trader in Caldera (rich merchant to sell
high-price stuff to), and Balmora University (convenient place in
Balmora to train up all your skills). I also like Passive Healthy
wildlife (only blighted beasts attack you). I recently started using
one to give my Kahjiit natural constant-effect night-eye, because it
just made sense to me.

I don't know about the GOTY edition, I have the seperate packages, so I
leave that questions to others. :)

The main Morrowind storyline and the expansions don't really depend on
each other. In the Tribunal story you will encounter characters which
have been mentioned in the main story, but it's not a requirement to
play the stories in a particular order. In fact I'd recommend to at
least enable Tribunal when you start out, as the improvement to the
Journal is important. Also, if you play with mods, see below, many of
them require Tribunal.
There is not really a reason not to install and enable the expansions
for playing the main story. You can play the main story and the
expansions at the same time. It somewhat makes more sense to finish the
Tribunal story after finishing the main story, but that doesn't mean you
cannot start the Tribunal story at all. You can leave one storyline at
any time and come back later.

My personal favourite essential mods are from this page:
http://www.hiredgoons.net/MWFiles/

- Wakim's Game Improvements
- Dodge Mod
- Thief experience overhaul
- Armor effects
- Nighttime door locks (gives you the original Daggerfall feeling :) )

Additional:
- Herbalism or Advanced Herbalism (they do pretty much the same)

Those mods I always have enabled. Of course, ask other people and they
will give you another list of preferred mods. :)

A good list of mods is here:
http://home.bellsouth.net/p/s/community.dll?ep=87&subpageid=149175&ck=
(has the above mentioned herbalism mods)

Rule of thumb for using mods: Backup a savegame -before- you install a
mod. In most cases you can remove mods again and continue the game
without problems, but in few cases you will be glad to have a savegame
around. No need to decide on and install all mods when you start the
game, you can install most during your course of playing, though there
are a few exceptions which require you to start a new character.

While the original, unmodded game is already a masterpiece, I found some
mods to enrich the experience drastically.

I was attacked my an assassin once with my first vharacter. Killed him, took
his armour but was never attacked again.
Any reason why?

Never attacked again in how long? Have you played other characters?

You spoke to a guard since. Now you have an entry in your journal that
you probably never noticed, telling you to go talk to someone in
Ebonheart about it. If you actually want to keep being attacked by the
assassins, you must never talk to any guard at all.

Actually, I think you have to go talk to the guy in Ebonheart to
officially stop the attacks. That said, I find the attacks quite
random. Some of my characters get attacked a lot from the very
beginning of the game, and some don't get attacked for a long time
and/or are very rarely attacked. Resting while seriously injured
seems to enhance the probabiity that you'll be attacked. Resting only
when fully healed seems to reduce the probability of attack.
But,....it's hard to really say what causes the variation.

That is what the guard tells you, but I've never been attacked after
getting that journal entry. Of course, most of my characters don't delay
a long time before actually going to Ebonheart, so maybe it just reduces
the probability.

Thats right. Italked to guards and Black Brotherhood still attacked me. I
never went to Ebonhart. I'd rather see them attack me so I kill them, take
their armour and sell it to Creeper. Quite some money the easy way got.
