Going to upgrade a pretty old PC from around 2011 but I'm unsure of where to start

As the title says, I'm looking to upgrade my pc. I'm already getting 960 for basically nothing but other than that I really don't know. Currently I've got this:

AMD Phenom ii X4 955
MSI 890FXA-GD65 (MS-7640)
AMD Radeon 6870 HD
Kingston 2048 MB (DDR3-1337)
I've also got a 650w Chiefteq(?)

Reason I'm going to do this is because I've starting playing PC again after a while and my current PC struggles to maintain a decent FPS on Overwatch(around 90 but drops too often). Just putting in the 960 would probably cause a bottleneck, yes? Keep in mind I'm not PC savy or have a lot money to splash currently(might change in a few months lol)

A GTX 960 will give you a major boost in performance, sure your processor isn't the most powerful but it should handle overwatch pretty fine when paired with GTX 960. Your power supply seems alright for now as well. Also, for gaming 8GB ram should always be a minimum so an upgrade over there is needed. What is your budget? I recommend an Intel i3 or i5 depending on your budget.

Around $500-600 probably. As for the RAM, should I just get another of the one I have or buy completely new? A new CPU is def a priority, but I'll find out very soon if my current one can handle the 960 without much problem. I would prefer upgrading to an i5 but unsure which would suit my soon 960 the best. Lets say I get a i5 and 960, do I need a new motherboard? Thanks for answering so quick and sorry if I unnecessarily quoted you.

An Intel platform will require a new motheboard, and 6th skylake will require DDR4 memory.
