Golden Sun 1 (and 2) worth buying a GBA for?

I've been putting this off for a while, but that NES GBA might push me over
the edge. Of all the games to choose from, these two intrigue me the most.

Can anyone tell me how the story ranks up there with the greats (FF3/6,
Chrono Trigger, FF7, etc)? Also, I've read some reviews bashing the long
dialog. Can anyone give me an idea just how long some of these
conversations are?

Thanks.

I haven't played those titles all the way through, so I can't honestly
compare.

The games DO have a good story line. Not OMFG THIS IS R0xRs!!11, but better
than average. Keep in mind: 2 games = 1 continuous story line. Game 1 just
stops, and game 2 picks up.

I like both games a lot. The puzzle solving aspect makes it much different
than your typical RPG (though somewhat limited in complexity....Zelda does
it better), plus the whole class/djinni system puts an interesting twist on
things that I have not seen before in any RPG.

Worth owning? Definitely! Should you buy an GBA just for those two games?
Maybe not, but there are a TON of other great games out there for this
system. If you can think of at least three more games you want for it, then
I would suggest getting one :)

If you do buy these games, make sure you get all the Djinns from the first
game, they can be carried over to the next game. Don't want to give up
any plot details, but it's worth getting them all. I blew it and missed a
few, but still had a great time playing both games.

In Golden Sun 2, I got so irritated by the random and way too frequent
interruptions by monsters when out in the open travelling. Completely
pissed me off to where I abandonned the game after a week.

The games are great, and GS2 is much longer and more involved than GS1.
Should you get a GBA just for these two games? Maybe, maybe not, but there
are plenty of other great games to play too, so I recommend getting one
anyway.

I didn't play GS2, but for GS1, picture trying to solve Zelda puzzles while
being interrupted for random battles every five steps. Then multiply the
annoyance factor by about one million, give it a cool commercial, and you
have my GS1 experience.

I don't know why nobody mentions these random monster interruptions more --
it completely ruins this game!

It's been a while since I played GS1/GS:TLA, but from what I remember, they
were nowhere near as bad as the random encounters in Breath of Fire I and II
(especially the latter).

There ARE spells and items that you can use to reduce/eliminate enemy
encounters....

Yes, I know; I was factoring them into the response. Sacred Feathers in Golden
Sun seemed to work fairly well from what I remember; and the Mrbl3s in BOF-I
were cheap enough to have a ready stock on hand. The equivalent in BOF-II (was
it still called Mrbl3?) were considerably more expensive, and of far less use.

I don't know of spells to completely eliminate encounters, only reduce them,
and then for a very short amount of time. The spell reduced encounters are
still too much to tolerate.

Yeah but without the encounters, you wouldn't have been able to level up,
or find rare items.

Its kind of amazing that an RPG plays like an RPG.
