In My Documents I have a special folder for my Sims 2 downloads (from
there I install them to the right directory), all catagorized in their
own folder (hair, objects, hack, etc). Yesterday everything was there.

After I uninstalled McAfee Security Suite (subscription expired) and
installed McAfee Virusscan and Firewall (free download from my isp) and
deleted all files that were in quarantine my download folder was
completely empty! Also the neighborhoodfolder from Simscity 4 was gone
(but my downloads were still there). Weird. None of the files in
quaratine were in those folders and I know for sure that I have no
viruses or trojans (scanned yesterday before the subscription was
expired) and it is very hard to hack my computer (firewall on my
computer, modem also has a firewall) and why would they?

My guess is that McAfee did something weird. So now I'm backing up the
important Sims2 files. I was planning to clean up that folder anyway,
since I deleted a lot of downloads recently, but still it's a bit
frightening, I never deleted those files (as far as I know).

I also found out that I do need a dvd rewriter; no more multiple
zipfiles so that everything can be devided between various cd-rw's.

I always knew I hate McAfee, now this gives even more of an excuse to hate
them :)
Sorry that happened to you.

Well, after Norton McAfee is much better, at least it will uninstall
properly and it doesn't crash my tv software every 15 minutes.

Paranoid me just backed up all important files and decided my ideal
birthday gift is a dvd-rewriter.

Does anyone know a good back-up program which I can set to back up
regularly?

Apart from the 'anti-virus' part, which on NAV actually does detect viruses.
Anyway, if you want to uninstall a Norton prog (which I will agree don't
uninstall properly) you should uninstall it then use SymNRT (Symantec Norton
Removal Tool).

Not that I've ever used it, but Norton Ghost might do it if you can be
persuaded to use it. 😉

After I totally upgraded my system last year I bought McAfee, Norton has
never been on this harddrive and never will if it's up to me. Especially
since we can download McAfee for free courtesy of our ISP.

I think my father has an ancient version somewhere, but I doubt it will
work with XP. Found a program by Orlogix "Backup MyPC" which seems nice,
see if I can find some reviews.

Thank, scanning as we speak, although I do not get my hopes up.

Well I still have all the installed downloads, it's just the folder I
download my downloads to (from there I install them).

But everything is going wrong now, McAfee can't uninstall. So I guess
it's time for a complete reinstall.

A year ago when I installed this computer it put the main HDD as F (and
my backup HDD as C, which died shortly after). So I give the
computerstore a call if they can format the HDD for me if I bring it and
see if I put it in again if it will be the C drive (which would make my
life so much easier).

But since it's just 5am here I have to wait another 4 hours before I can
make that call. So for now I'm backing up my mp3's and find all the
installation disks.

Not exactly my favorite way to spend a very humid night and day...
