my mobo just died on me and ive been searching around for a good replacement.
Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P is my current dead one. i was thinking about upgrading to an GA-990FXA-UD5 R5 (rev. 1.0) but i can only find refurbs with insane price tags, would there be a better option for me to upgrade to?

- For $80 you can get same motherboard you were using from newegg : GIGABYTE GA-970A-DS3P (rev. 2.0) >> https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIABVR5P12991
- since the FX platform is non longer competitive performance and power saving wise, it wouldn't really be recommended to drain your money into an expensive motherboard replacement, instead it would be better choice to either get the cheapest replacement motherboard awaiting an upgrade, or use this opportunity to go straight for a platform upgrade to newer CPU+motherboard (either AMD ryzen or intel) and take advantage of all the new features they are packed with like M.2 NVMe ports, USB 3.1 gen 2, DDR4, USB C etc at cheaper price because of better availability. some websites offer attractive pricing for CPU+motherboard combos.

heres the issue i have with a full upgrade like that, i have $100 USD that im not supposed to touch but i need something within reasonable brackets that is fully compatible with my current hardware.. would the DS3P be an upgrade to the D3P? i dont see much of a difference in specs between the 2.

Definitely is not an upgrade but just a conservative budget replacement since you mentioned that your motherboard is non usable, and since non refurbished non used motherboards of that chipset have high price tag (>$200 either on ebay, amazon and newegg) in case you'd prefer investing the least while saving for a complete platform upgrade.
