This is the build that I have came up with. I choose the gtx 970 because it is 3d ready, Want to take full advantage of my monitor. I tried to get a good motherboard that will allow me to add sli in the future if needed and also another 8gbs of ram. Any suggestions for changes? Also I am debating on whether I should get the i7 or i5 cpu. This would be for playing games and watching movies on and off of 3d.

I usually recommend Platinum-rated power supplies (they run cooler and save on electric bills), but you can save some money and get the G2 550W Gold-rated Power Supply instead. That's the lowest I would go though.

Very reasonable so far.

You will need a quality power supply in the 550w range.
If you are planning on sli(which I do not recommend) you will need more like 700w.
Seasonic is good quality.

I will never again build without a ssd for the "C" drive. It makes everything you do much quicker.
120gb is minimum, it will hold the os and a handful of games. If you can go 240gb, or 500gb you may never need a hard drive.

I would defer on the hard drive unless you need to store large files such as video's.
It is easy to add a hard drive later.
Samsung EVO is a good choice.

I would use a Cryorig H7 instead, for a similar price.
No need for thermal paste, it comes with either cooler.

I updated the list and this is what I came up with. I decided to just get one gtx 1080 instead of a possible sli 970. So because of this I want to know if there is a cheaper motherboard that would work along side the i5 and 1080. I want to try to make sure that I only get what I need so that might also mean that the psu might need to change as well. I want to try to stay around 1700 including extras. I removed the keyboard because I already own one for my current pc so I will just get a cheap gaming keyboard for this one and swap it out.

I see a GTX 1070 is that what you meant? Also do you really want to spend over $100 just to overclock the i5? The Hyper 212X dual fan cooler is very good. I changed the DDR4 to 2800, motherboard to a Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD3, PSU to Platinum and Hard drive to 2TB Seagate. Double the storage as the 1TB Black and still 7200RPM for $8 less.
