current system is an evga 980 ti ssc acx card, i5 4690k and 16gb of ram.

Dont want to change the gpu as im happy with the 980 ti as most games I play it should be fine with 1440p.

Just wondering if it would be worth slapping a 4790k and delidding and overclocking it as much as I can and go for a full custom loop and set up a modded bios on the 980 ti just to really maximise the performance I can get or just use my aio (celcius s24) and keep the gpu on air?

Your system should be able to handle 1440p gaming without any issues, esp if you are gaming at 60hz. Rather than going for a delidding, OC, and custom loop, use that money to purchase an i7. The performance gain will be bigger and it will most likely cost less than a deliddin, OC, and custom loop.

I think the performance gains from a loop on a GPU are negligible.

awesome thanks I will probs just grab 4790k when I have got my monitor then I will probably just delid it still and keep my current aio as its good and will spend some money on a better case and fans to keep the gpu cool and just leave the stock bios on :)

I mean, a 4790K and pushing the CPU + GPU to it's limits would always be "better" than stock..... but probably not proportionate to the hassle involved.

A 980TI is solid enough for 1440p, so no harm there.
A 4790K is a decent improvement for modern games.... whether it makes sense as an upgrade depends on the cost.

I'd go for it in the ~$150 range, much beyond that though, and it's really tough to justify.

The SSC ACX should be fine on Air. For raw performance value, a custom loop is never going to make sense. Even strapping an AIO to the GPU is going to be a poor value choice. By the time you buy an AIO (~$60) and a bracket ($20-$30) and consider what you could sell a 980TI for (>$200, generally) that $300+ would be better spent picking up a stronger GPU.

Not that it's a huge step up, but 1070TI's are available in the $350 range.... and would be a much better option (IMO) than spending a lot of money to cool/mod a 980TI.

yeah thought that would be the case!! always worth a check though :) just gotta find a nice case now already know everything else that im going to buy :)
