im looking into building a new gaming pc and id really like to keep it under 850 ~. i dont need a monitor, powersupply, keyboard/mouse and i dont need windows. This is what i have so far, any advice would help a lot.

MOBO: Asus A8N5X or A8N-E Socket 939
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131569

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Venice
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103531

MEMORY: Corsair 1gb (2x512MB) 184 Pin DDR SDRAM Dual Channel
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145440

HD: no clue, i wanted something cheap but good for gaming, and around 80gb or more

2of these: CD/DVD DRIVE: LITE-ON Black 16x DVD-ROM 52x CD-R http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustratingReview.asp?item=N82E16827106992

VGA: XFX Geforce 6800GS 256MB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150118

All of that plus the cost of the case im going to get from fry's ($80) plus assuming ($100 give or take for HD) comes out to about $850. These parts seemed like they would make a great system for the price.

concidered dual core cpu's - there worth it!!!

ram - corsair altho good it usually not worth it - there are better deals, and maybe concider 2gb

hdd - i tend to stick to seagate, others dont - its a personal thing through personal experience, but if you insist - id prefer seagate and wd over maxtor and samsung (but i know that there is nothin wrong with either of them).

dvd/cdrw drives - if you get a dvd burner, they can burn and read almost anything (INCLUDING CDS) - save the few $$$ there and buy one.

Yeah those are all good suggestions. As far as hard drives go, I use Seagate SATA drives. They seem to boot up faster and have a little more zip than my maxtor drives do. Although I've had more problems with Seagate over the years than anything else, I still recommend them. Their support from my experience is top notch.

thanks for the replies. i like the idea of going to a 3200+ and taking the 7800gt. I also didnt realize that the dvd drives didnt burn dvds so since i only need one dvd burner i figure ill keep one of the lite-on and then get this:

NEC DVD BURNER (says its DL for $39...)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152058

anybody got some ideas for a hard drive?

Yea, I also like the idea of the 7800GT, and a more affordable CPU.

As far as the HDD goes, I would consider the 80gb Seagate Barracuda. I have been satisfied with mine, so far. It's a sata 3gb/s, and the standard 7200 rpm. I've had mine almost 2 months and have no complaints. Not noisy at all, and I got mine around $60 bucks at newegg, so it's not expensive either.

By the way, I would seriously reconsider your choice of RAM. I don't dig using value ram or cheap PSU's on performance-oriented systems. If you spend about $25 bucks more, you can upgrade to the Corsair XMS series C2PT, and you will be improving your performance for only a small amount of money. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145450

i took a look at the RAM and i think ur right, it makes a lot of sense to just spend a few extra bucks and go with something thats going to work well. As far as a harddrive i like ur suggestion as well with the seagate barracuda, for another $20 i can get a 120gb which is great. After the last couple of posts ive revised my list and it looks like this:

MOBO: Asus A8N5X or A8N-E Socket 939 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131569

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103535
MEMORY: XMS Corsair 1gb (2x512MB) 184 Pin DDR SDRAM Dual Channel http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145450

HD: Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm 120gb 8mb cache SATA
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148039

CD/DVD DRIVE: LITE-ON Black 16x DVD-ROM 52x CD-R
http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustratingReview.asp?item=N82E16827106992

CD/DVD DRIVE: NEC DVD Burner (also burns in DL)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152058

VIDEO CARD: XFX Geforce 7800gt 256 MB

ttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150108

CASE: will come out about $80 (at least 450W powersupply included)

Sorry, this may sound like a dumb question, but why are you buying two optical drives? If you have a DVD burner, why do you need a DVD ROM/CD-R as well?

Doesn't that NEC burner also function as a CD-RW as well?

Oh, so you just burn them from one drive to the other, instead of first saving to your hard drive, then back onto the burner. Thanks.
