Good motherboard to pair with Ryzen 7 1700?

So I researched different motherboards to pair with my Ryzen 7 1700 and found a lot of people liking the Asus STRIX B350-F. I was going to buy this particular board but it is sold out everywhere. I am now wondering what I should buy instead so I thought I would seek help here.

I am new to overclocking but plan to overclock this CPU using the wraith stock cooler included. The most I am willing to spend on a mobo is about $150. I am aware of the X370 chipset but feel that I would not take advantage of the perks included, as I only plan to use one graphics card. I do not know however if it would be beneficial to purchase an X370 as I am overclocking 8 cores.

Solution
Performance-wise, most motherboards are within 1% from each other thanks to practically all performance-critical circuitry being integrated in the CPU.

As for boards being "pretty good to OC a 1700", bear in mind that 3.8GHz is less than the stock XFR boost on a 1700X/1800X, meaning that nearly all boards should be able to manage this much if you CPU can comfortably handle it anyway. Also, a fair chunk of the cost difference between b350 and x370 is Nvidia's SLI license fee. There are plenty of b350 motherboards (and even A320 ones) that use the same VRM as z370 motherboards and should perform very similarly power-wise.

Picking a specific motherboard over another specifically for overclocking only matters if you plan to push hard to...
First-gen Ryzen aren't particularly good overclockers and with the stock HSF, you can't hope to achieve much more than the 3.8-3.9GHz that almost any board can manage anyway. If you aren't going to need the z370's extra bells and whistles, going with something based on the b350 is perfectly fine.

Board quality is pretty comparable between the main 4-5 manufacturers at any given price tier, it really boils down to picking the board with the features and look you prefer when you aren't into extreme OC/enthusiast stuff.

3.8-3.9GHz is just fine. I did not want to go overboard for my first time experimenting with OC. I just watched a few videos about in depth reviews on the ASUS X370-Pro and the Gigabyte X370 K5, which are suppose to be pretty good for OC a 1700. Even though I would not be doing anything extreme, would you recommend one of these boards? Or should I go for something cheaper if I plan to not touch the extra additions?

If you are only going to nudge clocks up to whatever the Spire HSF can handle and be happy with whatever you get, then you are nowhere near the point where you should seriously worry about motherboard selection for reasons other than getting all the features that you foresee needing.

Solution
I love my ASRock AB350 Pro4 motherboard

  • ■ two M.2 slots (including NVMe bootable)
    ■ three 4-pin case fan headers
    ■ RGB header for the Wraith Spire LED cooler and supporting software
    ■ good overclock support
My Ryzen 7 1700 is happily chugging away at 3.6 GHz.

I've also got an msi B350M Mortar Arctic, but I prefer the ASRock board.

I have the same board with a Ryzen 3 2200g all good but I can't get it to output graphics when I install a Ryzen 7 1700....& I'm using a discrete GPU, not the onboard Vega 8. What BIOS rev are you at? Mine is 5.10
