Good temp for q6600 overclocked to 3 GHz?

Hi, I'm a newb when It comes to overclocking, I recently got an Intel q6600 quad core for my rig, it runs at 2.4 GHz stock, I overclocked it to 3 Ghz, it runs at about 65C under full load. Is this good or bad? I know the q6600 can go higher, like 3.6 GHz but I don't want to try until I get a good aftermarket heatsink/fan.

It depends on your CPU cooler. If you're using the stock cooler, it probably seems about right. I have the G0 6600 and I am overclocking to 3.6GHZ but I bought the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro and my temps are much less. With the freezer and some Arctic Silver 5 I'm idling at about 36-37 with a full load temp of about 46. What cooler are you using?

It's good for stock cooler. You shouldn't push it any further before that aftermarket cooler arrives.

Steven I'm using the factory fan and heatsink, I used prime95 and coretemp to test with, I let prime 95 run all 4 cores at 100% for 30 minutes and the max temp for any core was 65C.

You've got to take into consideration your ambient temps and your case's airflow. What is the average ambient room temp?

For instance, I have a 80F (80 - 32 x 5/9 + 32 = 26.6C) room and the hottest core on my OC'd Q9450 @ 3.37Ghz idles @ 49C, hits 58C on load on an unlapped TRUE in a Cooler Master Cosmos 1K...

Now when I turn on the AC and bring it down to ~71F (71 - 32 x 5/9 = 21.6C) I'm seeing ~46C on the hottest core and 55C load

Of course I may need to reseat my cooler, wait until the AS5 cures, lap the TRUE, get a cooler case, but the ambient room temps are definitely playing a notable role.

I've tried 3 different coolers, an Xigmatek S1283, a Zalman 9700NT, and now the TRUE. All are pretty close in temps, for me.

The quads are just plain warmer than the duals. So when I hear that someone has a Q6600 OC'd to 5Ghz running @ 25C under load I just kind of wonder.

...again, take note of the ambient room temps.

SteveB and rperson9 - What kind of room temps are you all operating your systems in? My room temp is 77F or 25C. When I tried to overclock my Q6600 B3 to 3ghz on the factory cooler my computer shut down because it reached 85C in prime95. Right now I am using a Coolermaster Gemini 2 that has six heat pipes and 2-120mm fans and MX2 thermal paste and I am still hitting 68C in prime95 with it clocked at 3ghz. I wanted to get to at least 3.4ghz when I put this system together but with the temps I am getting I decided to stop at 3ghz. My case is a Uber Chakara with a 250mm side fan with a vent in the side panel just as big,a rear 120mm fan and my power supply has a 135mm exhaust fan so air flow shouldn't be a problem. Is the B3 that much hotter than the GO or are you guys operating your systems in walk in refrigerated coolers that you just happen to live in! A Freezer 7 Pro at 46C in prime 95? You do have all four cores operating, right? C'mon guys what's the secret!

My room temp is about 65-70 deg F, so about 18-21C. It is getting hotter here in chicago everyday, and I built this system in january. Per this thread, I will run Prime 95 again and check the temps. Stay tuned for an update. And FYI, my case is a Coolermaster Stacker 832. 1x front 120mm intake, 4x side 120mm intake, 2x back 120mm exhaust, 1x top 120mm exhaust. So I have a lot of air flow, spent $110 on Scythe silent fans alone! Lemme boot up old prime95 and have a looksey.

It's the G0, the B3 runs a LOT hotter.

I got my G0 running at 3.45ghz 1.4125 Vcore and it usually runs between 43-50C idle/light tasks. Temps vary alot due to the Northern Climate, plus the computer room also houses my reptile.

Under normal load, not Prime as i forget what the load temp was for it, it rarely passes 60C

18-21C. Lucky dog, those are great ambient temps and great for cooling.

My room temp stays pretty cool, it never goes above 65-70 degrees as I'm renting a basement apartment, even in the summer. I'm also using the G0 version of the q6600. I did another test with the cpu clocked at 3.3 GHz, let prime 95 run for an hour and the average temp was about 72C, I set it back to 3 GHz though as I'd like this CPU to last a few years

After running P95 last night and checking my temps I have to question the validity of the Nvidia System monitor. My idle temps across my 4 cores were: 27, 29,30, 28. When I loaded P95 and checked my temps again it claimed to be: 26, 28, 26, 27. Obviously nvidia hardware does not play well with nvidia software! So, feeling like an ass for bragging about good temps I downloaded coretemp and reran the tests. I'm idling at about 50 ( :-( ) and hitting about 65 on full load. Well, thats what I get for trusting nvidia has reliably monitor their own sensors (on the 780i).

After my findings, I have decided that sometime this week (maybe even tonight) I am going to lap both my heatsink and my CPU for optimal contact and reapply Arctic Silver 5. The Arctic Freezer 7 Pro I bought came with some thermal grease already applied, but I dont know what exactly is on there. The reason I am posting this here is because rperson989 might be interested in seeing what temps an overclocked Q6600 runs at with a lapped CPU and HS. If your interested, message me and I'll tell you where this thread is located when it is created.

Hey, Steven, I have a very similar build to yours, I have the Q6600 G0 stepping, with B and not B3. I didn't apply Artic Silver 5, I just left the regular thermal paste that came with the AF7, some people said that Artic Silver wasn't needed, so I just didn't apply it. I have another question, which one tells me my temperatures best, Speedfan or Core Temp? On Speed fan I'm 36-39 C on Coretemp I'm 52-54. I have a Q6600 , evga 780i, 2 GB and the ArticFreezer 7 Pro. I'm also planning on lapping it, I want to see what temperatures and speed I get, currently overclocked at 3.0ghz, I tried 3.5 after reading all of this, and it worked, but I didn't like my temperatures, but I loved the speed.

Type1, I dont really know which is better, they both gave me the same temps. Checkout the thread above, I will be updating it when the Arctic Silver 5 burns in.

Steven and rperson989, where do you live? cuz im in Canada (summertime avg 25c - 77f outside), not sure of my ambient temp, but its comfortable (today anyway lol), no AC, one house fan and my Q6600 G0 @ 3GHz (for now), is 36c idle and 44c under load (even with Speedstep and C1E disabled in bios), with OCZ Vendetta 2 CPU cooler and Antec 900 case (the 4 included fans (at medium), plus one that i added. No lapping done at all. temps according to Core Temp v0.97.1 right now writing this are 35-35-33-33 , and voltage according to cpu-z is 1.35v but bios shows lower... how in the heck did you have 59c idle and up to 80c under load?! Do you live in Brazil or something?

PS. lapping should be done with water since it is water sandpaper which makes what you're rubbing against it smoother. I remember using it in high school when we were heating up and bending that plastic stuff to make coin trays and key chains. I know its called wet/dry, but if lapping a HS or cpu you get it wet and put a dab of dish soap on the heat sink only then put sandpaper on flat surface (glass is prolly best) and using only the the weight of the HS, you move it (no pressure) back and fourth to make it smooth.

And for the guy that said if you lap your HS you should do your cpu cuz its concave or vex w/e... bullsh*t. Cpu is already flat. And if the surface you are using IS flat, then how the heck would it be concave/vex??? Lapping means to gets rid of the grooves. should not be altering anything but the grooves. if your HS is concave/vex... take it back cuz its defective! And someone said the B3 is a LOT hotter... its only consumes 10w more :| 105w (B3) vs 95w (G0), so a LOT is pushing it.

Hey, thought id post in here instead of starting a new topic cos' this is along the lines of my issue/problem?

I have OC'd my Q6600 to 3Ghz and when running idol its at (according to CoreTemp) 46 46 43 43. and when under load using OCCT it reaches 70C within the first 10 minutes or less.

I live in sunny England, Yorkshire, its pissin it down with rain, my room is small but my system is near to my window, I have a room fan on and the window open. Im abit concerned about these idol temps.

Can anyone reassure me or make any suggestions?
