I was wondering what was a good motherbard to upgrade to after using the Z87 sabertooth, i was thinking of the MSI x99 and using aa 1080, might also need a new power supply as well, pretty sure this is the one i have now so might need suggestions as well so it's compatible with GTX1080

That would require at least a new motherboard and a new CPU.
Z87 CPU socket is the 1150.
X99 CPU socket is the 2011-v3.
Many third party CPU cooler vendors require that you contact them to get the 2011-v3 brackets. 2011-v3 CPU's do not come with a CPU cooler or fan. If you are using a stock Intel CPU cooler on the Z87 system, factor in buying a third party cooler when you go to the 2011-v3 system.

post your current specs. coz the z87 with a good cpu shouldnt need upgrading yet unless you absolutely need the newest hardware.
personally i would just go with a gpu upgrade if i was using something like an ivy bridge quad core already. as the outlay just doesnt warrant the performance gains.

4770k should handle the 1080 no problem* at stock and oc'd
your psu is way more than needed for a 1-2 card setup, especially for the 1080 which uses about half the power of a 980ti.
typical load for a single 1080 build will be around 300w, so with a 1200w psu you would have more than enough grunt to run a 2-3 card build you wanted.
6+2pin is an 8 pin connector mate. so no need for a new psu either.

but they are referencing a particularly buggy game engine (warhammer total war) in there results so it may well be that the game itself is the cause of the bottleneck and not the hardware.

your motherboard is pretty much as good as it gets for the z87 series motherboards.
as for the problem with the 980 ti i dunno why you had an issue. they should fit perfectly.
although sometimes they can be a little awkward and stiff to get the pegs in the holes. but they are keyed so they only fit 1 way.

Your CPU will NOT fit into the x99 socket. It requires a motherboard with an 1150 socket. Scroll back up to my first post to you where I talk about the changes you need to do to move to a 2011-v3 (X99) based system.
As mentioned by others above, your motherboard and CPU should be fine.
GTX 1080 will work with that system

That means you should buy 4 sticks of DDR4 memory. Intel lists 2400 speed as the top end, but check the motherboard manufacterer specs for the board you want to buy.

yes the 1080 will work on your current motherboard.
as i said earlier you dont need an x99 motherboard as you would need to buy a new cpu and the performance gains above what you already have if any wouldnt be worth the outlay.
you would be looking at maybe 1-2 fps by switching to a new platform.
your current cpu is still very good and it also overclocks like a champ
