i ask this because i get told by my friends norton and avg are good programs and i feel they dopnt know anything bout computers.
can u guys make sure i have good protection on my pc because i dont want to have too much programs. i got avast free, malwairebytes pro, free superantispyware, spybot, what other programs do i need. is it recommended to have a program that deletes temporary files to speed up your computer.
is it recommended to have a firewall on my computer.
my computer is an hp pavilion desktop.

Why you need some muck protection ? For what ? You need a good antivirus and antispyware and antimalware.
I use Eset NOD32 antivirus , Malwarebytes,Spybot Search &Destroy. With Windows firewall. The best free firewall is Comodo. You don't need so many ANTI in your pc because they make you pc go slower. For deleting and cleaning registry and temp. files i use Tune Up.

It was only Malwarebytes that cleared a pretty annoying malware in my wife's laptop, and my boss' computer at work. Currently I run both free malwarebyte and free Avira in my home computer, and malwarebyte pro and Symantec at work. It seems that they are doing their work, although nothing has been caught so far after the previous episode with malware.

i like m s e but it took 5 hours to do a full scan, but on avast it took an hour on my pc. for quick m s e took about 40 minutes, on avast 10 minutes. thats y. i dont know y it is so slow.

I just timed a quick scan(85gb used), it took 27 seconds.

If you friends said that Norton was good then they do not know anything about computers. Don't get me started about what is wrong with Norton I could go on for hours (pages).

It is hard to recommend a good anti-virus solution , certainly there is no need to pay for one. At the end of the day it boils down to personal preferences. My vote would go to Microsoft security essentials combined with Malwarebytes anti-virus program (the free version only which is non resident, that you run when you need it).

The Norton products in the past couple of years are top notch security products.

You are getting me started.

I hate Norton products with a vengeance having been badly burnt by them in the past, Every year they say that Norton nowadays is not as bad as it was in the past and every year I evaluate it and find the same old issues have not been fixed.

Here is a short list of problem areas that Norton falls short on.

1. Norton can fail to uninstall cleanly and cause problems with outlook and outlook express. I know that this issues has been dealt with in the recent releases but I still don't trust it.
2. Norton is a resource hog, this is still true but nowadays on modem multi-core computers with many gigs of memory this is less of an issue, but I don't like the idea of one of my cores being devoted to the anti-virus program and if you are running it on an old computer forget it.
3. Norton flags up a lot of false positives which can be very annoying.
4. My biggest gripe with the program is that once installed on your computer it becomes Norton's computer, you have very little control over what it does.
5. The price.
6. It is not very good at removing embedded viruses, compared to other anti-virus programs.
7. To install extra features like anti spam (which you have paid for) can be difficult for novice users.

That being said Norton is reasonably good at preventing infections, but no more so than any of the free anti-virus solutions
